From Rachael:

Excuses Excuses...

I had all intentions to send this email on Friday night, but I was a little distracted. Saturday morning we welcomed a new little girl into the Ward Family. She doesn't yet have a name (someone has already suggested "Bailey") but she's lovely and thriving on her very own zero mile diet (breastfeeding)! We'll do our best to rest up and see you at Friday's pickup.

On to the email that was mostly written before all the excitement started:
Wow! Friday was quite the day for local food! We had lots of amazing food ordered and even more on the spontaneous table that the farmers could not anticipate would be ready! August really is an amazing month and we look forward to bringing more yumminess to you!

More Organic Produce for you!
We would like to congratulate Angie on all the hard work that goes into organic certification as Fertile Ground is now certified organic! All the farmers who are certified organic follow many steps to attain certification by a third party. Thank you to all the farmers who have taken this extra step for our health and the heath of the earth!

Here are some highlights for this week:
  • Traditional Foods Whole Roasting Chickens on sale at $4.25/lb (reg $5/lb) only 30 available!
  • Peaches, Plums and Pears from Palatine on Friday! Yum!
  • Torpedo Onions are back from Soiled Reputation. They are a very mild onion and are amazing on the grill.
  • Melons have begun to appear. We have added cantaloupe to the order form. We may even have watermelon added by Tuesday. We will keep you updated.
  • Lester and Irene Brubacher have the first cabbage of the season available. You can choose from green and purple.
  • Lena Horst has Dragon tongue beans available. They are a yellow bean with purple stripes through out

Don't forget about the suppliers that are available this week to order and stock up:
  • Gordon's Goat Dairy goat cheese
  • McKechnie tortillas, chips and tamales
  • J & D Peters pastas
  • Jamestown Mill's Gluten free flour
  • Oak Manor for all your grain needs. We will not have delivery from Oak Manor again until September so be sure to stock up on any items you may be running low on.
  • Barrie's Asparagus is offering a deal for you on their Asparagus Tortilla Chips! Tim wants you to try them and fall in love! (see below)
Barrie's Asparagus/Barrie Bros Special on Tortilla Chips + NEW Asparagus Flour
Tim Barrie would like to offer you a chip discount - $1 off each bag this week only! You should try these chips! They offer the great taste of the McKechnie Tortillas chips with the added goodness of asparagus! What's so great about asparagus? Read all about it at http://barriesasparagus.blogspot.com/2011/06/health-benefits-of-asparagus.html

One of Barrie's Asparagus new products is the same gluten free Asparagus Flour that makes the chips so good! It will be available for a limited time in the 'grains' section

Taste Local! Taste Fresh!
Foodlink's Taste Local! Taste Fresh! culinary showcase on September 18 is rapidly approaching and there are only a few weeks left to take advantage of our special early-bird ticket prices. You'd better get your tickets if you haven't already because this year's event promises to be better than ever. With twenty exciting all-new farm-chef pairings the menus will astound you with their creativity, artful presentation and dazzling array of local flavors. Enjoy a relaxed afternoon on the banks of the Conestoga River in St. Jacobs tasting exquisite hors d'oeuvres and listening to live music.

The cost is just $65 until August 31; $75 from September 1. It includes all tastings and a beautiful one-of-a-kind pottery plate. Don't delay because last year we sold out and had to turn people away at the door! For further info or to purchase tickets online visit http://www.foodlink.ca/index.php?p=16 or call 519-513-8998. All proceeds from the event go towards Foodlink in our effort to support local food and local farms.

Have you heard of the newest music festival based on Local Food?
Daniel Lanois and friends will be playing at the 2011 Greenbelt Harvest Picnic at Christie Lake and is highlighting local food too! Details are at http://www.harvestpicnic.ca/

And if you have time:

Enjoy this week!
