A message from Rachael:

Are you looking forward to the long weekend or are you already off? Just a quick reminder that our order form for the next regular pickup on Friday September 6th is ready for you when you have a few minutes. We've added a few new items recently:
  • Sweet Corn from Kevin Snyder. We have 40 dozen available.
  • Edible zucchini blossoms (and lots of zucchini too!)
  • Watermelon
  • Radicchio
  • Broccoli
  • Purple Cauliflower
  • Romanesco Cauliflower
  • White Knight Peaches
  • Cold pressed organic hemp, flax and sunflower oil from Mat's Fine Oils
I wanted to talk about all the varieties of plums we have to offer. Right now we have blue, red and green plums available. Let me tell you a bit more:

Vanette is a Blue Plum that is fully freestone, juicy nice flavour, has some prune like characteristics
Voyager is a Blue Plum that is almost freestone, slightly tart, develops a nice flavour as it ripens
Ozark Premier is a Red Freestone plum, nice flavour, softens fairly quickly
Vanier is a  Red Freestone Plum that stays firmer longer
Shiro is a round, yellowish green plum with a pink blush. It is a very juicy, clingstone plum

And on top of all that we have:

  • Nectarines (now in 10 and 20 lb quantities)
  • Raspberries
  • Plums
  • Clapp Pears
  • Sovereign Coronation grapes
  • Blackberries and red currants
Niagara fruit for Friday:
All our Niagara fruit is Tree Run, which means that the fruit is not sent to the grading station. The fruit is picked riper (and tastier) and avoids fungicidal baths and defuzzing of peaches. The size of the fruit may be bigger or smaller as well.

Things to look for in the next regular pickup:

  • Lighthouse Lemonade. Surprisingly amazing with soda water (and gin)!
  • Biscotti from Circle of Life. They are in the Gluten Free Baked Goods section - a great treat if you know someone who would appreciate a treat!
  • Spud's Finest Potato Chips with new crop potatoes. I bet you didn't know they could get better than they already were!
  • Goat Cheese from Gordon's Goat Dairy
  • Organic grains and flours from Oak Manor
  • Rounds Beans. Great for dips, soups, chili and more
  • Green Table Foods have their prepared soups, stews and dips available this pickup!
  • Shiitake mushrooms in half pound bags are back
Enjoy this last long weekend of summer,
Maryrose and Rachael

A message from Rachael:

This would be a great week to stock up for everything you need for back to school. Summer always passes too quickly and whether you are going back to school or not, something changes at the beginning of September (hopefully this year it will finally feel like summer). We will not have a pick up August 30th (the Friday before labour day weekend) and will be back with the autumn bounty September 6th.

  • Babygold - These clingstone peaches are sweet and juicy with solid flesh (peel with a knife) that are perfect for canning. They stay form when processed.

From Torrie on what is coming:

I will have nectarines, maybe for next week, and then for about a month. My white flesh peach are White Knight and they start in about 2 weeks. I also have a very few donut peaches, likely next week. Sovereign coronation grapes will be starting next week. Himrod, white seedless grape in 2 weeks. And Clapp pears soon.

Things to look for this week:
  • Rounds Beans - time to stock up! The freshest dried beans around!

A message from Rachael:
Where is the sweet corn?
There are a few dozen ears of corn available this week. I wish I had better news. This corn is from Ruth Martin. Ruth's farm was certfied organic in the past but though it no longer is, her practices remain the same.

Why is there very little organic corn this year, you ask? Well, some didn't germinate as well as the farmers expected, others grew kernels up only half the cob. I'm sure the cool nights aren't helping growth either. In past years Paul Bowman and The Kingwood Farm grew organic corn - lots of it! This year Paul moved north near Timmins so that his children would have more land to farm in the future and Kingwood decided to scale back a bit this year and concentrate on growing cucumbers and winter squash. Corn is also a tricky crop that unless a few rows are planted successively in the spring, all the corn matures at the same time - and our farmers don't know when that is! They won't sell us corn that was picked Monday for sale on Friday so unless we're lucky the crop often gets put up for winter or tilled under. If you are interested in bulk corn for farm gate pickup on a day other than Friday in the future please let us know and we might be able to get you some corn!

Niagara tree fruit for this week:

All our Niagara fruit is Tree Run, which means that the fruit is not sent to the grading station. The fruit is picked riper (and tastier) and avoids fungicidal baths and defuzzing of peaches. The size of the fruit may be bigger or smaller as well.

Did you try the Sugar pears last week? They were small, sweet and green (they don't turn yellow) - so good! My children ate them first!

Torrie has two varieties of peaches:
  • Garnet Beauty - A medium/large semi-freestone peach with yellow skin and a pink blush. Juicy and great for pies, cobblers and fresh eating
  • Veecling - Best for  fresh eating and canning. It is a large yellow clingstone peach that will remain firm when processed.
There are lots of plums this week:
  • Early Golden, small and large sized, yellow often with a blush.
  • Shiro, greenish to yellow, clingstone, juicy, sweet when ripe.
  • Blue plums are freestone, small or large with nice flavour
What we do have:
  • A new supplier! Jewels under the Kilt is roasting Ontario tree nuts with sweet (and sometimes some heat) You'll find them in the pantry sections and Lis will be sampling on the 23rd.
  • Did you try the hot tamales from McKechnie on Friday? We sampled Chicken, Pork and Bean and Beef Tamales (in the 'prepared' section) with the wonderful Crema La VaQuita from Local Dairy (in the 'dairy' section)
  • The tortilla chips, taco shells and tostadas from McKechnie are all super fresh and yummy and made with GMO free corn!
  • J&D Peters makes all the flour products that we previously had listed under McKechnie. The amazing stone ground wheat wraps have new packaging and they make some of the best local pasta too!
  • Blueberries from Walkers (no spray) are now available in 3L baskets and quarts as well as pints and flats. Pleasant Berry's conventional berries are also available in pints, baskets and flats. Blueberry season only goes until the end of August (weather permitting), so now is the time to fill your freezer!
  • Golden Hearth is back from a well deserved vacation and ready to bake for you!
  • Lemon Macarons and Chocolate marshmallows from Ambrosia Pastry Co.
  • 'Bulk Tomatoes and Zucchini from Organic Oasis, Kale too!
  • Melons!
Be well!

A message from Rachael:
Oh the peaches!
My dining room table is covered in fruit. I've waited months for this.  Peaches and apricots stay out of the fridge (they can get a mealy texture when chilled) and I have a fan blowing over them to discourage fruit flies from landing. Just a quick note on care of your soft fruit: To prevent bruising, peaches are not completely ripe. Spread them out on newspaper on their side or bottom (not stem down) and not touching each other and they'll ripen over the next few days.

Good food this week:
  • Awesome vegetables:
    • Swiss chard
    • Beets
    • New crop potatoes
    • Torpedo onions (great for grilling!)
    • Spicy greens - Arugula, Asian mix for braising, Spinach (not so spicy)
    • New crop carrots
    • Cabbage
    • Cucumbers
    • What is your favourite?
  • From Warner's Farm we have Peaches, Plums and Pears!
  • Bulk Tomatoes and Zucchini from Organic Oasis
  • Melons!
Enjoy your weekend!

Apologies if you tried to order on Friday. Our order system is hosted by a company whose servers were down for 6 hours on Friday due to a major hardware failure. Unfortunately this occurred a few hours after I sent my email reminding you to order. If you tried to order and our ordering website didn't load, I'm very sorry. This was out of our control and affected quite a few websites that day. I now realize that the email might not have been sent to everyone, so if you didn't get it you can read it at

Walker's Blueberries

My kids and I went blueberry picking last week at Walker's for the first time. It was lovely picking! High bush blueberries are great. You tie a bucket around your waist and pick with two hands. You don't need to bend over and there aren't any brambles. The toddler can graze from the bucket and the older children can pick as many or as few as they want. Every few minutes you'd hear animal noises or bird calls. It's a way of scaring off animals and birds so that they don't eat the berries. Also, I asked some questions recently and found that the Walker's patch is not certified organic so I've removed that label from their berries as we only label certified organic products as organic. These blueberries are pesticide free as they do not spray their bushes.
(Their PYO in New Hamburg is generally open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8am to 1pm - call them first at 519-662-2558).

More apples are here!!!

From Steve Martin of Martin's Family Fruit Farms:
"We have Vista Bella and Lodi (green harvest apple) now and we will almost certainly have Jersey Macs by Aug. 9th I am going to offer 3 litre baskets only in these early apples as I think that half bushels are too much for your average consumer and the apples are so thin skinned that they will transport better actually already packed in the baskets.

If someone is looking for sauce apples I have seconds available in Vistas and Lodis in half bushels."

If you would like a half bushel of #1 Lodi of Vista Bella apples please contact us as we can arrange it!!

Other items to look for:

  • Apple Creek Farm organic Yellow Transparent and Vista Bella Apples
  • From Warner's Farm we have excellent berries and tree run* stone fruit:
    • Garnet Beauty Peaches: A medium/large semi-freestone peach with yellow skin and a pink blush. Juicy and great for pies, cobblers and fresh eating
    • Shiro Plums: A round, yellowish green plum with a pink blush. It is a very juicy, clingstone plum
    • Apricots (they were delicious last week!)
    • Black Currants, Blackberries and maybe (yes, just maybe) Cherries.
    • *Tree Run means that the fruit is not sent to the grading station. The fruit is picked riper (and tastier) and avoids fungicidal baths and defuzzing of peaches. The size of the fruit may be bigger or smaller as well.
  • Zucchini from Brenda Knechtel
  • Beets in larger quantities from Sam Bowman
  • This is the week to order awesome prepared foods from The Nutty Bakers! Get enough for a month!
