A Message from Rachael:

Beans and Pulses
If you haven't yet stocked up on beans and peas and lentils - barley too - from Rounds Beans, the time is now! We use Marrow Fat peas in the crock pot with smoked ribs for a tasty dinner, Great White Northern beans make awesome vegetarian baked beans and the Red Lentils make a quick and easy (did I mention tasty?) soup. We had friends over recently and this 20 minute recipe was made fast and enjoyed by 2 families.
  1. Sautee an onion in sunflower, canola or olive oil,
  2. Add sliced carrots (2 to 3), a clove or two of chopped garlic, and sautee them also
  3. Pour in about a cup of red lentils (no soaking required).
  4. Add a can of tomatoes (we love the ONFC Organic cans!) and water to cover
  5. Add salt and a bay leaf or other herbs if you 'd like
  6. Let cook for about 20 minutes.
Enjoy with crusty bread and it's even better with a couple curls of cheese on top (some might add lemon juice)!

More about our suppliers (my second installment!):

  • Revive - Teas mixed by Helen using only organically grown ingredients. The names of her blends are great, including Please Make it Stop - PMS for short!
  • Rounds Brand - Dried beans that we offer every few months. Fresher than you'll find in the grocery store!
  • Snider's Pork Sausage - The recipe was passed down through generations. This sausage got top marks from my dad and sister!
  • Snyder Heritage Farms - GMO and Drug Free turkey as well as maple syrup that adheres to organic principles. Both are the best we can find!
  • Stemmler's - Meats from local farms that are prepared with food sensitivities in mind. Ask us if you are looking for options that are Gluten, MSG, Lactose and Nitrate free
  • Tia's Bakery - Tasty breads and baked goods that are so good you wouldn't guess they were gluten and dairy free!
Here are some more favourites to look for:
  • Vibrant Farms Ground Beef back on the order form!
  • Gordon's Goat Dairy! A limited amount their award winning goat cheese available.
  • Spud's Own All Ontario Kettle Chips. 2 for $5!
  • Tortilla chips with Asparagus from Barrie's Asparagus! Available in Salted, Unsalted, Spicy and Nacho Cheese
  • Stoned Wheat and Vegetable Crackers too!
  • Organic Flour and Grains from Oak Manor. I hear the 7 grain cereal is tasty!
  • Turkey Necks and Backs (awesome for soup) from Snyder Heritage Farms are on sale! Only $2.75!
  • The finest flavoured chocolate bars from Anna Tolazzi. One of my favourites!
  • Onions, Carrots, Beets, Radishes and Potatoes. The winter staples!
  • The tasty sausage from Traditional Foods that you know and love is now brought to us from Gumboot Gourmet!

For those of you who grew and tended Purplestem Asters for this project (and those who didn't) here is a great upcoming event:
The World of Pollinators: What's the Buzz?
with Kim Fellows, MSc, Outreach Coordinator, Pollination Canada

Tuesday, February 26 at 6:30 pm
Forest Heights Library

Without pollinators, we’d be eating mainly grasses and grains. Kim will discuss the importance of pollination and threats to pollinators, as well as the Bee-Friendly Farming Initiative and a new citizen science project called the Purplestem Aster Pollination Adventure. Find out how you can help pollinators thrive.

Be well,
Maryrose and Rachael

Yum! Introducing Bread Heads

We have a new supplier this pickup. Bread Heads is offering bread, rolls, scones, squares and muffins. Yesterday there were two articles written about them. A  Message from Rachael:

Maryrose and I met last night to talk about the foods our farmers will grow this year. They are already planning their year and ordering seeds. Is there anything you want to see on our order form this year?

This year will be particularly interesting as Paul Bowman, on e of our awesome farmers (they all are) is moving his family north to the Timmins area. He will be missed by his community, but this is an opportunity for his children to continue farming. The people in Timmins have no idea how lucky they are! Word of his move has travelled fast and other farmers have started contacting us and asking if they can grow for us. It's exciting.

Kevin at Snyder Heritage Farms wants winter back. I asked if he is worried about his maple trees and if they will get confused by 15 degree weather in January, but he assured me that it's the weather in March that affects the harvest. Just think that in a couple months we'll have new crop maple syrup! Right now, however, Kevin has lots of turkey necks and backs and is putting them on special and as well is offering starter packs of his raw ground turkey that your pet will love.

  • Turkey Necks and Backs - awesome for soup for $2.75 (Reg $5.25)
  • Ground GMO Free, drug free raw pet food. Your pet will just love the stuff! Smaller portions now available!
NEW from Traditional Foods! Traditional Foods is now offering nitrate free smoked loin chops. They are delicious, cured in maple syrup. $9.50 for a pack of two or save on a 5 pound pack for $43.00.

A few more things you might like:

  • Salsa from Barrie's Asparagus is FINALLY back! We've missed this.
  • Rounds Beans available this order and not again until the end of March or beginning of April - Stock up!
  • New Moon Cookies - 'tis the season for LOVE BITES - the best spicy chocolate cookies around!
  • Oak Manor. Since it's baking season we'll have flour every pickup until we go weekly.
Enjoy this sunny day!,
Maryrose and Rachael

Bailey's Local Foods ordering now open for MONDAY January 28th pickup in Waterloo!

Click http://baileyslocalfoods.ca/ordering to log-in and order.

Items that you have placed in your shopping cart will be ordered on your behalf on Tuesday January 22nd at 8:00pm. There is no checkout button. If you do not intend to order, please ensure that your shopping cart is empty.

Our "Winter" dates are Monday Jan 28th, Feb 11th, March 4th and 25th, April 15th
Friday dates will resume in May!

From Rachael:
Thanks to all who joined us at yesterday's pickup. We've made some tweaks to improve your shopping experience. From now on, we're going to keep you out of the kitchen (can someone do that for me at home?)! We'd like to get the fridge and freezer items for you, so that the kitchen is less congested and getting you the right items is easier! We think it went pretty well yesterday and would like your feedback on what you think of it!

Another quick reminder that the church parking lot is not for the use of our members, even on pickup days, so we ask you to park in the Waterloo Town Square Lot (behind the LCBO) while you are picking up your order.

We need to leave spots reserved for the ministers and staff of the church open 24 hours (yes, even at 7pm) . Please be aware that the main reason we ask you to park in the larger parking lot is safety - with so many people (especially young children) walking through the lot, it is much safer for everyone with fewer cars moving about.
Those with disability parking needs are welcome to park in the church lot and we are happy to help anyone carry a large order or heavy items out - Just ask!

Things to look for this month:
  • Flour and grains from Oak Manor
  • Dried Beans from Rounds
  • Cheese from Monforte, Millbank and Local Dairy
  • Likely the last of the local apples.
  • SO much more - even in the middle of winter!
Be well,
Maryrose and Rachael

A Message from Rachael:

Happy New Year!

Are you back to the grind? Still enjoying some time off? Whichever, I'd like to remind you to get online and take a few minutes to order for the next 3 weeks. Get the cheese you love, the bread that freezes so well, the meat that you can thaw anytime and the veggies that will keep you healthy.

I want to thank all of you for being part of this wonderful community. I feel so blessed to have gotten to know so many people through Bailey's. Sometimes I feel that I don't know half of the people who order, but for every new person that I connect with, I am truly excited.

On New Year's Eve I grinned from ear to ear as I bumped into so many people that I met from Bailey's. I saw and chatted with a couple people at Vincenzo's then ran into a handful more at the 9pm kids midnight in the Waterloo Public Square and even one on the free bus ride home (3 blocks)! The other night I even emailed a member that I hadn't seen in a while but had been thinking of. Turns out she was thinking of me too.

It was so neat to go to a holiday party in the community back in December and see so many familiar faces there too.

Thank you for getting to know us, for saying hi, for telling us what you like and what you don't like. We are running this business as part of our lives and making all of you a part of that too.

May 2013 be bright and peaceful for you. May you enjoy the people around you and grow your community and grow and eat great food too!

Over the next little while I'm going to try and tell you a couple things I like about each of our suppliers starting at the bottom of the alphabet (you already know that Ambrosia has great cookies and more awesome pastries to come!)

  • Traditional Foods: Nutrient dense and GMO Free and some of the tastiest sausages around! Read more at http://traditionalfoods.ca/
  • Triple H Horseradish - Spicy and made fresh! We keep it in the fridge. This mellows with age and make a great seafood sauce mixed with Ketshup
  • Vibrant Farms - Organic, Grass Fed Beef. It is nutrient dense and really speaks for itself! http://vibrantfarms.ca/
  • Winnie's Gluten-Free Foods - Our newest supplier with baked goods and prepared items. Vicky started adapting recipes when her daughter Winnie was diagnosed as Celiac. I'm looking forward to trying her perogies!
  • Working Centre microgreens - So tasty on soup or salads! Grown right in Kitchener!
Here are some more favourites:
  • Manitoulin Wild Caught Fish! The smoked one is by favourite!
  • ONFC Tofu! It freezes beautifully!
  • Beans! The vegetarian baked beans served at lunch for 30(!) were a hit and they featured Great White Northern Beans from Rounds Brand. Stock up now and we'll offer them again in a couple months!
  • Spud's Own All Ontario Kettle Chips. 2 for $5!
  • Pasta and Noodles from J&D Peters - Did you know that noodles have eggs and pasta doesn't?
  • Tamales, Tostadas, Tacos, and wraps from McKechnie. When we opened our last bag of tortilla chips I noticed that the label said 100% organic corn! Way to go Doug! We're so excited for lots of amazing changes. As soon as we find out that all the chips will be organic we'll change the listing, but in the mean time we know that all the corn is GMO Free.
  • China Rose Radishes. They were so pretty at the last pickup that I had to take a photo!
  • Organic Flour and Grains from Oak Manor. I hear the 7 grain cereal is tasty!
  • Golden Guernsey Milk - So creamy!
  • Turkey Necks and Backs (awesome for soup) from Snyder Heritage Farms are on sale! Only $2.75!
Be well,
Maryrose and Rachael
