In memory of Wendell Bailey (1944-2012)

Hello to all of you in our Bailey's Local Foods family. I am writing this email with great sadness.

On Saturday, we lost Wendell Bailey, a dear friend. Wendell has been the number one helper in every sense since Bailey's started.

Wendell is husband to Bonnie Bailey and father to Nina, Sonya and Greta. He will be missed greatly by his family and many in our community. Thank you Nina for starting Bailey's Local Foods with your dad's help. Thank you for sharing your dad with all of us.

Wendell, you have been the face of Bailey's Local Foods to farmers and members. Always helping. Always cheerful. Silly, with a dry sense of humour. You will be missed, especially by our children, who remember you fondly.
If you would like to join in celebrating Wendell's life, there will be a memorial for Wendell at Erb St. Mennonite Church (Waterloo, Ontario) on Wednesday, May 2nd at 6:30pm. Next week there will be a memorial in Goshen, Indiana on Monday May 7th also.

You can check out Wendell's bio (and a couple great photos) on our website.

His obituary is beautiful and is a testament to this wonderful man and his family. You can find the newspaper version online, and the full obituary on his memorial page and below:

Wendell Bailey was born on June 7, 1944 in Goshen, Indiana. Wendell's childhood revolved around the family farm â€" helping with fieldwork, feeding geese, driving tractor, playing with siblings and friends, and learning from his parents the value of good, honest work.
As a college student, during the height of the civil rights movement, Wendell volunteered with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 1965 as part of a voter registration drive in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. As a white person supporting the cause of desegregation, Wendell was imprisoned several times. As a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War, he travelled to Poland in 1968 to perform alternative service with Brethren Voluntary Service.
In 1973 Wendell married Bonnie Mierau and together they raised three daughters. He expressed encouragement and affection all the time. He was a very loving husband and father.
Wendell taught in a one-room Amish schoolhouse for 23 years (grades 1 to 8) - many students and parents in the Amish community became an intimate part of Wendell's life. During countless softball games outside the schoolhouse, Wendell's fun-loving and encouraging presence was unforgettable.
Wendell operated a duck farm for many years - family and friends who worked with Wendell saw his uncanny ability to turn the shovelling of duck manure into a memorable experience (mostly because Wendell made work times into times for storytelling, learning, and fun). Over the years, he was also known to keep pigs, horses, cows, and chickens.
Wendell loved telling stories and listening to others' stories. He seemed to have a steel-trap memory. He often supplemented dinner conversations by going to the bookshelf to select an encyclopedia about the topic at hand. He welcomed the chance to meet new people, learn about the world, and pull jokes out of his sleeve.
When he became a grandfather, Wendell was always ready to run, play, sing, and horse around. Wendell nurtured a warm relationship with each grandchild.
In 2006 Wendell and Bonnie moved to Waterloo. In the last few years, Wendell became a dedicated driver and a 'here-let-me-carry-that-for-you" fixture at Baileys Local Foods. He was also a regular and charismatic volunteer at the Speak English Cafe (Working Centre).
During the last three months, Wendell's recovery from heart bypass surgery was complicated by increasing bone pain, which was eventually diagnosed as bone cancer originating in the prostate. Wendell died at home on April 28, 2012 at the age of 67.
Wendell is survived by his wife Bonnie (Mierau) Bailey of Waterloo; four siblings Max Bailey (wife Judith) of Seattle (Washington), Lowell Bailey (wife Joan) of Goshen, Ellen Weaver (husband Roger) of Goshen, and Woody Bailey (wife Bonnie Sue) of Goshen; three daughters Nina Bailey-Dick (husband Matthew) of Waterloo, Sonya Kesler (husband Andrew) of Goshen, and Greta Owens (husband Jeremy) of Dalton (Georgia); eight grandchildren Reuben, Bailey, Saloma, Foster, Mona, Ezra, Oliver and Silas. Wendell was predeceased by his father Hubert Bailey and his mother Opal (Kauffman) Bailey.
A memorial service will be held at Erb Street Mennonite Church on Wednesday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m. Plant a tree in his honour.

With love,
Rachael and Maryrose

I ran into Heather at the Kitchener Market on Saturday. She had a great ordering strategy that I want to share with you. When she gets the reminder that ordering has opened (this one) she places her preliminary order. This is a great way to get first dibs on items that are limited and the items you always order. You can always go back and make changes, but at least you'll get a little something each week!

The asparagus and rhubarb will be ready for this order! Yay for fresh spring food!

An album giveaway! Rose Cousins at First United Church

Extension!!!
Yeah, I feel bad for not emailing to remind you last night. Just in case this finds you after 8pm on Tuesday we left ordering open until Wednesday at 8pm (sharp!)

Pie in a Jar
You may already know that I can't eat gluten (or dairy, but maybe that is temporary) so most pie is off limits for me. Thankfully the good folks at The Cider Keg in Vittoria (near Simcoe) have made a tasty preserve that surpasses jam and is reminiscent of pie filling. How do I eat this, you say? Well, I'd suggest with a spoon, as that is how half a jar disappeared when we opened the pumpkin flavour at our house (I shared). Youc could put it on bread and put it in one of those hot sandwich maker machines (infomercials from the '90s?) or with ice cream... Mmmm.
I've listed the ingredients, as they are pretty awesome. It's Ontario fruit, apple cider, sugar, pectin and sometimes spices. Yum.

Remember:
  • Green garlic - little like green onions, but you can use most of the stem if you are out of local garlic heads
  • Nith Valley Organics added some salad greens and more spinach (it's officially spinach season!)
  • Tortillas, tamales tostadas and tacos including their NEW multigrain tortilla chips!
  • All your favourite GMO free meats from Traditional Foods!
Be well,
Maryrose and Rachael

A Message from Rachael:

I'm not sure how many of you were part of Bailey's back when it all started. If you were there and are still with us, thank you. If you have found your local fix elsewhere but still get these emails I hope you are well. If you wonder why I wax nostalgic, read on! When I started buying from Bailey's Local Foods as a member the pickup was in the carport at the home of Nina and her family, including her mom and her dad, Wendell. It was the rainiest of summers, but somehow, every Friday afternoon the weather was fine (except the Fridays when there was no pickup - instant monsoon). This business has grown and changed but I love that the sense of community gathering still lives on. I'm glad that we can bring mostly amazing food to you, winter and summer. I love to be able to ask farmers what a fair price for their food is and pay them as promptly as possible.

Wendell helped his daughter with her visionary idea of local food that first year by driving. He picked up produce for the many families who had ordered in his van. Produce mostly grown by Old Order Mennonite farmers who could not easily bring their food to us. He has been the face of Bailey's for our farmers. I am so thankful for all he has done. Driving is not all Wendell has done to help at Bailey's Local Foods. Wendell lent a hand wherever it was needed. He did the important stuff like buying (locally made) Dilly Bars from DQ when we were celebrating a birthday on a pickup day. All with a smile.

I am very fortunate to now call the Bailey family friends. I ask you today to join me in supporting this wonderful family and especially Wendell.

At the end of January, Wendell had coronary bypass surgery. His heart (one of the biggest I know) is now working well again. We were hoping he could come back and drive for us again this summer, but have just learned that the pain that he has been experiencing is caused by cancer in his bones. I ask that you send Wendell and his family your prayers and good wishes for less pain and successful treatment.

If you have messages for Wendell I am happy to pass them on to him and his family!

Okay, now back to food.

It's spring. Garlic is sprouting the salad greens are ready but other than that? The root veggies that are left are pretty amazing. Asparagus and strawberries are what we're waiting for. Let's hope that the rain that is forecast for this week does good things for the soil. Helping to germinate, using the sun's energy to start the seeds that will become our food.

In the mean time, look for:

  • Organic apple sauce, cider and apple butter from Apple Creek Farms!
  • Conventional apples still available from Martin's Family Fruit Farm!
  • Organic Jona Gold apples from Pfenning's just added (let me know if you want a larger quantity than 3 lb bags!)
  • Floralane grape and beefsteak tomatoes. I love that these get better if you leave them on your counter. The salad we had today was from tomatoes we bought at the last pickup! Buy a few extra for next week.
  • GMO Free meats from Traditional Foods and Organic grass fed beef from Vibrant Farms
  • Butter, yogurt and cheese...
  • Breads and sweets - even wheat free, gluten free and vegan options!
  • Prepared foods and desserts from The Nutty Bakers
  • Popcorn and peanuts, because you need a tasty snack
  • Sparkling cider to wash it all down
  • Straw bales for your garden. Use them to create a raised bed or to help make weeding easier!
Monday evening we'd love to see you at Taste of Woolwich in Breslau! The event is from 5 to 8 p.m. at Breslau Mennonite Church, 226 Woolwich St. S. A $2 donation is requested of adults, and children are free. For more information, visit www.healthywoolwich.org.

Tomorrow I'll tell you about our newest product - Pie in a Jar from The Cider Keg - but now I need to go watch my son ride his bike!

Until then,
Maryrose and Rachael

A Message from Rachael:
I officially open the season for eating spring greens! Have you seen them all on our order form? Last night my son decided to skip the potatoes for dinner (he had the bacon, onions and mushrooms that were fried together for toppers) and ate at least half a bag of fresh greens with a oil and vinegar dressing. My kids eat well, but this was unusual. I think it was the Nith Valley Greens that we enjoyed. They were sweet and tender and he's already requested more for dinner tonight! Fresh salad greens are amazing in this cooler weather. When it gets warmer the plants will bolt and go to seed (and make the greens bitter), so no is the time to enjoy!
A few things for you to note:
  • Check the Preserves page for Pie in a Jar from The Cider Keg. There are 5 varieties, the ingredients are sugar, cider pectin and fruit (some spices too) and I'm sure it's great many ways, but I really enjoyed the Pumpkin Pie in a Jar on a spoon!
  • New gluten free flours from Jamestown Mills and Barrie's Asparagus! The portobello mushroom flour smells almost like chocolate! It is available for a limited time. Tim says it is full of dietary fibre and goes a long way when you add it to soups, stir fry and other meals! We'll put them all in the 'grains' section, despite some being grain free
  • Local Dairy has a new 6% Greek style strained yogurt and 2% and 3% Asli Bahi Yogurt (The culture from India is less sour than the yogurt we are used to)
Local Theatre - Creation Story
We are so excited to support a new local play. “Creation Story” explores food security on and off-stage

Creation Story is a new play about our relationships with food, the earth, and each other. Its characters struggle with their evolving identities and the legacy they are leaving for future generations against a backdrop of the looming presence of biotechnology and agribusiness.

The workshop production of Creation Story will take place:
Friday, April 13 at 8:30 pm
Saturday, April 14 at 7:00 pm
Sunday, April 15 at 7:00 pm
Shows are at The Button Factory, 25 Regina St. S, Waterloo. Doors open 30 minutes prior to show time.

A post-show discussion about the play and the issues it explores will follow each performance. There will also be an information fair before and after each show. The Organic Council of Ontario (OCO), the Waterloo chapter of Seeds of Diversity, Bailey’s Local Foods, and other local food-related organizations will be present. The conversation will continue through a monthly workshop series with OCO on “Protecting Our Food”, running until Organics week in September.

Tickets are available at Words Worth Books in uptown Waterloo or Full Circle Foods in Kitchener for $10-$15, on a sliding scale.

For more information, interviews, press tickets, or to get involved in the project, please contact Laura McDonald at 519-880-5642 or laura@raindancetheatre.org.
