We are changing our May pickup to FRIDAY May 11th so that you will have fresh, local food for Mother's Day weekend! (formerly Monday May 14th) In June we will have pickups on June 1 and 15th and if the strawberries are ready we may have a June 8th pickup! (Can you believe we're already talking about berries?). Starting June 15th we will run every Friday until Thanksgiving! We will not run on the Fridays before long weekends in the summer.

Welcome to all our new members, especially those from Breslau who are ordering for pickup at our satellite location!
If you're new here and want to read more, check out our past emails at http://baileyslocalfoods.blogspot.com/ It's a great way to learn about the local foods to expect all year long!

A Message from Rachael:
I officially open the season for eating spring greens! Have you seen them all on our order form? Last night my son decided to skip the potatoes for dinner (he had the bacon, onions and mushrooms that were fried together for toppers) and ate at least half a bag of fresh greens with a oil and vinegar dressing. My kids eat well, but this was unusual. I think it was the Nith Valley Greens that we enjoyed. They were sweet and tender and he's already requested more for dinner tonight! Fresh salad greens are amazing in this cooler weather. When it gets warmer the plants will bolt and go to seed (and make the greens bitter), so no is the time to enjoy!
A few things for you to note:
  • Check the Preserves page for Pie in a Jar from The Cider Keg. There are 5 varieties, the ingredients are sugar, cider pectin and fruit (some spices too) and I'm sure it's great many ways, but I really enjoyed the Pumpkin Pie in a Jar on a spoon!
  • New gluten free flours from Jamestown Mills and Barrie's Asparagus! The portobello mushroom flour smells almost like chocolate! It is available for a limited time. Tim says it is full of dietary fibre and goes a long way when you add it to soups, stir fry and other meals! We'll put them all in the 'grains' section, despite some being grain free
  • Local Dairy has a new 6% Greek style strained yogurt and 2% and 3% Asli Bahi Yogurt (The culture from India is less sour than the yogurt we are used to)
Local Theatre - Creation Story
We are so excited to support a new local play. “Creation Story” explores food security on and off-stage

Creation Story is a new play about our relationships with food, the earth, and each other. Its characters struggle with their evolving identities and the legacy they are leaving for future generations against a backdrop of the looming presence of biotechnology and agribusiness.

The workshop production of Creation Story will take place:
Friday, April 13 at 8:30 pm
Saturday, April 14 at 7:00 pm
Sunday, April 15 at 7:00 pm
Shows are at The Button Factory, 25 Regina St. S, Waterloo. Doors open 30 minutes prior to show time.

A post-show discussion about the play and the issues it explores will follow each performance. There will also be an information fair before and after each show. The Organic Council of Ontario (OCO), the Waterloo chapter of Seeds of Diversity, Bailey’s Local Foods, and other local food-related organizations will be present. The conversation will continue through a monthly workshop series with OCO on “Protecting Our Food”, running until Organics week in September.

Tickets are available at Words Worth Books in uptown Waterloo or Full Circle Foods in Kitchener for $10-$15, on a sliding scale.

For more information, interviews, press tickets, or to get involved in the project, please contact Laura McDonald at 519-880-5642 or laura@raindancetheatre.org.
