A Message from Rachael:
We've enjoyed the week off and I really meant to send you an email, but playing with kids and weeding the garden took priority. I think this is the first time my garden has had attention in two years. Having a baby last August really changed our priorities!

The Cherries are ready!!
There will be cherries on Friday. I'm not sure if they will be Lapin or Hedelfingen. Both are superb! The orchard that we get cherries from is one of a few that was not affected by the late frosts this year. We are very lucky! These are trees that are not organic, but have been treated using Integrated Pest Management (IPM). IPM allows to treat only for pests that pose a threat to the crop instead of using extra sprays and this farm uses the least invasive methods. They also skip the fungicidal baths that are common before delivery. We are very happy to bring this fruit to you!

From the Palatine website:
Attention to detailsOur fruit produce is grown with attention to details such as:

  • Flavour enhancement
  • Nutritional quality
  • Shelf-life
Our fruit is picked tree ripe, which results in exceptional flavour.
We are committed to producing an excellent product.

Insect Management
We focus in IPM (Integrated Pest Management).  The orchards and vineyards are scouted by individuals who are trained to recognize insects and diseases.  We only spray when insect numbers exceed a certain threshold.  We use sprays that have the least negative impact on beneficial insects, birds and animals.  Products such as molasses, oils, clay and Growers Nutrional Solutions are used to enhance the health of the trees and vines.

Fungus Management
We also use IPM methods and the services of scouts for fungus management.  We prefer to use sulfur, copper and 35% hydrogen peroxide.

Weed Management
Under trees, we use a minimal level of herbicides along with mechanical weed-control, as well as mulch.  We have eliminated the use of long term residual herbicides.

Soil Nutrient Management
Our soil management is continually evolving, using the recommendations of Carey Reams, Dan Skow, and V.A. Tiedjens along with our own observations.

Invitation to dinner with the Farmer's Daughter
Have you ever wanted to meet your farmer? Melissa Baer is inviting you to dinner at her home and farm! This is the organic farm that we are happy to work with to bring you very tasty organic grass fed beef!

Here is Melissa's invitation:

My name is Melissa Baer, founder of Vibrant Farms, and on Facebook as The Farmers Daughter, and twitter as @afarmdaughter.

I have always loved having people over and entertaining, being able to share the beautiful place I call home and the unique connection to my food that I am blessed to have.  So as a result of a suggestion from a friend, I decided to host "Dinner with The Farmers Daughter".

What it is, you can bring a group of friends, even co-workers, or family members, you arrive at 6:30, just in time for chores (make sure you dont bring your fancy shoes, or at least have a work pair to change into) we take a tour of each aspect of the farm, allowing you to see how we raise our animals, grow our crops etc, you'll get to play with and touch the animals and feed them.

Then we venture inside to enjoy an organic locally produced meal (as local as it gets - Straight off the farm!), Where there will also be organic and biodynamic wine from Southbrook wines, it includes a 5 course meal, and of course each menu item has a story and how and why it is prepared the way it is, how it can benefit your body, and fun facts too!  We sit out on the back deck overlooking the sun as it sets in the glen over the river with the cows grazing in the foreground. As the sun dips below horizon we head on over to the campfire to finish off the evening.

It has proven to be quite an enjoyable relaxing playful adventure, an experience of an authentic farm family experience! Rustic and simple elegance.  It is literally the BEST food you can get, prepared by yours truly, menu created also by myself.

Total cost 50.00 per plate
Groups of 10-16 are ideal (5-8 couples)
We can discuss how to customize it for your specific group, please give me a call or email orders@vibrantfarms.com or 226 808 2237

Would love to see you out for dinner!!
Week nights or weekends also available

Have a wonderful long weekend!

*** Order enough for two weeks!!! *** I almost forgot about the break myself!

A Message from Rachael:

Wow, the weekend went by fast! Ordering is about to close for our Friday pickup. Tell your friends that this is the week for strawberries.

A great reason to order this week is the strawberries and our Summer Season Opener. There will be lots of berries this week! Cherries are coming soon too! I'm getting ahead of myself.

Come for our Summer Season Openers
We have decided to host a Season Opening Event in Waterloo on June 22nd and in Breslau on July 6th. There will be several farmers and suppliers in attendance and many samples for everyone to try. This is our 4th summer season running at the First United Church. I can't believe I have had the privilege to become a part of such amazing concept that brings the taste of the season to you all year long.

New or returning Items to the offering list.

  • Bouquets from Garden Party - This week Theresa is offering an all green bouquet
  • Nathan from Nith Valley just added spinach bok choi and tat soi. These Asian greens have small holes from insect damage, but really, wouldn't it be scarier if the insects didn't want to eat the food?
  • Filsinger Organic Foods has local Grape Juice from Niagara and unpasteurized Apple Cider Vinegar. We've just added these and you'll find them with the 'preserves'
  • Kohlrabi is back! It looks like a UFO but is great cut into strips on a veggie tray!
  • Stock up on enough for two weeks - including the Canada Day long weekend!
  • You might need extra tortilla chips, salsa, wieners, or sparkling cider!
Stay cool,
Maryrose and Rachael

A Message from Maryrose:

Wow it has been a long time since we have had to clean up on a Friday night and turn around and get ready for next week. Are you as excited as we are about this?

Come for our Summer Season Openers
We have decided to host a Season Opening Event in Waterloo on June 22nd and in Breslau on July 6th. There will be several farmers and suppliers in attendance and many samples for everyone to try. This is our 4th summer season running at the First United Church. I can't believe I have had the privilege to become a part of such amazing concept that brings the taste of the season to you all year long.

This is the best week to buy Strawberries!!
It was so wonderful to see and smell all of those beautiful strawberries piled high. We had over 80 flats of strawberries picked for us this week. Thanks to Paul Bowman & Family, James & Elvina Bauman and The Horst family for growing such delicious gems.

Next week will likely be our last pick up for Strawberries and Asparagus as we will not be open on June 29th. If you plan to put some away for the winter months this would be the time to do it. Paul anticipates being able to pick at least 100 flats this Friday. We may have some strawberries in July but not in bulk quantities.

Casa Salsa Empanadas and Salsas!
Because you ask for it, we are alway looking for new prepared foods to offer. Emi from Casa Salsa was out at First United Church this past Friday sampling his salsas and a few other items. Casa Salsa is located in the Kitchener Market. Bailey's will be offering their empanadas which are not on the menu at the restaurant. They come in beef, chicken and veggie.

Local Milk! Finally!
One of the requests we have not been able to fulfill due to fridge space was Local Milk. On almost the same day we were contacted by Eby Manor about their newly available milk from a herd near St Jacob's, the church purchased a new fridge which means we have more space to offer refrigerated items. We placed our first order for Eby Manor Golden Guernsey 2% milk and you will find it in the 'dairy' section of the order form. It is pasteurized and fortified with vitamins A and D as required by law before being poured into 1 L classic glass bottles. They plan to offer Whole Milk and 10% cream in the future. Included in the price you see on the order form is a $2 bottle deposit. We will refund you upon return of the bottles from Eby Manor.

New or returning Items to the offering list.
  • Blush Twist from Cider Keg has finally arrived and is so yummy. It is a blend of sparkling apple cider with Concord grapes and Niagara Grapes. We may have to make another run out to Vittoria to pick up a few more cases!
  • Lester & Irene are back with their heads of lettuce. Please keep in mind lettuce will not be available as we get into the heat of summer. Enjoy it now.
  • Lena Horst is expanding her baking selection she will have strawberry rhubarb pie, bruschetta bread and garlic bread. These breads are loaves of bread seasoned with bruschetta or garlic. They would be awesome toasted with cheese! Maybe you'll need ice cream for the pie!
Farm Tour!
Sharon Voskamp has graciously offered her services to drive the countryside and pick up the wonderful produce grown by our old order Mennonite farmers each Friday in Wendell's absence. She has invited you to come with her! She said it would be great to have one person with her each Friday. If you would like to join Sharon you get to see the farms, meet some of the farmers and get a better understanding of where our food comes from. If you are interested in doing so please let us know. You would have to be at the church by 8.45 am on pickup day and would be back anywhere from 1 to 2:30 pm. Please bring snacks, a drink, and anything you may need for a working drive through the country.

Order quickly, this order period is very short!

Enjoying the Strawberries,

Maryrose and Rachael

A Message from Rachael:

Oh my, It's that time again when we have fresh, local berries and we'll be holding weekly pickups! Make sure you're not still ordering enough food for more than a week, though if you do by accident the yogurt will keep beautifully! I'm sure I'm not the only one who hasn't ordered much yet, but I've just been adding new items to the order form, so you have lots to choose from!

Just added:
  • MILK! 2% Golden Guernsey milk in 1 L glass bottles from a farm near St. Jacob's. Check out their website at www.ebymanor.ca
  • Strawberries (Apples are first on the fruit page, but scroll down!) Elvina Bauman had more organic berries and we'll have conventional berries on the 22nd
  • Peas and Speckled Romaine from Elvina also!
  • Theresa from Garden Party just added bouquets of flowers, fresh tea, radishes and lots of herbs!
  • Nith Valley has lowered the price on Jerusalem artichokes. He has a root washer and it's much more efficient than hand washing!
More to remember:
  • Stock up on Nutty Bakers items - They are moving to a retail shop and won't be baking for at least 2 weeks
  • Chocolate from Anna Tolazzi - Stock up as she's away for the summer - last pickup is July 6th
  • Cheese. So good on salad.
  • Greens - They will not be as plentiful in the heat of summer, so enjoy your salads now!
  • Pasta from J&D Peters
  • Tortillas from McKechnie - maybe some salsa for the chips
  • Green Garlic and Garlic Scapes - If you are growing garlic, use your own scapes soon!
  • BBQ sauce to spice things up!

Strawberries at Bailey's Local Foods - Ordering open until 8:00 pm on Tuesday, June 12th for Waterloo and Breslau!

This is a reminder that you should place your order before 8:00 pm Tuesday June 12th for pickup on FRIDAY June 15th.
Click http://baileyslocalfoods.ca/ordering to log-in and order.
Items that you have placed in your shopping cart will be ordered on your behalf on Tuesday at 8:00pm. There is no checkout button. If you do not intend to order, please ensure that your shopping cart is empty.
Upcoming dates are: Friday June 15 and 22, July 6, 13, 20 and 27, August 10, 17, and 24, September 7, 14, 21 and 28, October 5 and 19. (Thanks to Sharon for letting me know I left out September 21st!)

From Rachael:

Well, the rain in June is making up for April and May! After Friday's lovely soak which made all the farmers happy, we got three downpours and hail at my house Wednesday, though it sounds like the rain was quite localized. Let's hope that the farmers who needed rain got some rain and that the hail wasn't too damaging to the crops.

A few years back the Brubacher farm in St Jacob's had hail that damaged their raspberries so badly that they were no longer fit to sell and impacted the fruiting of the canes for a few years afterward. Luckily the berries that were hailed upon still made great jam (which sold very well to make up for some of the crop loss). Raspberries will be ready soon enough, but I'm getting ahead of myself here...

Strawberry season is here!
While the strawberries from Norfolk and Niagara are delicious and such a treat in late May and early June we are very happy to have strawberries from our own organic farmers available for the June 15th pickup!

Tonight I was thinking of Spinach and Strawberry salad. I love foods that taste so well together and are ready to harvest at the same time. Brilliant! Don't get me started about strawberries and rhubarb...

I'm reposting from last year as the sizing on berries and cherries is always so confusing.

  • A pint is half a quart (12 pints = 6 quarts = 1 flat)
  • A dry quart is a bit bigger than a litre (2 pints = 1 quart = 1.137 Litres)
  • Dry quarts and liquid quarts measure differently
  • The darker green, more sturdy looking plastic baskets with rounded corners are litres, the lighter green, slightly larger baskets with square corners are quarts.
  • Farmers are generous and tend to top up whatever container they are using.
And one other thing - Why isn't there a big discount for buying a flat? Well... it takes a while to fill up one pint and twelve times as long to fill the whole flat (of 12 pints). We let the farmers decide the prices that pay them for the work they do! There may be a flat discount next week!

Things to know that aren't about strawberries:

  • We now have Blush Twist from The Cider Keg - a delicious blend of apples and grapes - sparkling, of course!
  • Farmers are generous and tend to top up whatever container they are using.
  • We are stocked up on New Moon Cookies. Baked with love, but without eggs or dairy!
  • This will be the last pickup with Nutty Baker products for at least 2 weeks! They are moving to a new store in Stratford and will be taking a short break while they set up shop
Upcoming events:
Thanks to Malcolm who pointed out the error in the website for Open Streets UpTown Waterloo from my last email. It should have been

Bailey's Local Foods ordering now open for the Friday June 15th pickup in Waterloo and Breslau!

Click http://baileyslocalfoods.ca/ordering to log-in and order.

Items that you have placed in your shopping cart will be ordered on your behalf on Tuesday June 12th at 8:00pm.
There is no checkout button. If you do not intend to order, please ensure that your shopping cart is empty.

Do you Facebook? So do we! Find us on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/baileyslocalfoods and get updates faster than we can send an email when exciting items are added to the offering list.

June 8th - no pickup
I still have not heard confirmation on the organic strawberries and when they will be ready, so as of right now there will not be any pickup on June 8th. As soon as I know what price the farmers need for their berries I will add them to the order form because they *have* to be ready by June 15th!

Rain, rain...
Okay, so I'm not sure I'd classify Friday as lovely, but boy, did we need that rain! We hope that it makes all the seedlings happy and makes asparagus plentiful again. Thanks for being so cheerful on a rainy pickup day and be thankful that we have a dry spot inside to bring all that great food to.

Cheese! Cheese! Cheese!
Gordon's Goat Dairy is on this order form but only until Tuesday evening (or maybe Wednesday morning). They have very yummy goat cheese including:
C-Line: Moist, creamy, and buttery. Gord's original recipe made by adding a special probiotic to our Havarti recipe, perfect for the health-concious consumer. It is named after the road on which the farm is located.
Gouda Creamy, mild flavour.
Havarti: Firmer texture, more robust flavour.
Cheddar: Hard texture, mild flavour.
Goatserella: Mozzarella-like flavour - strays stringy, doesn't melt.
Our other favourite cheeses include Millbank, Monforte (we take CSA vouchers) and Mornington. Local Dairy is usually one of our favourites, but you won't find their cheese on the order form this week because they are out of town for part of next week. I'm sure their cheese will be even better when they come back well rested!

A quick list of what to look for on the order form this week:

  • Garlic Scapes! These amazing tasty harbingers of spring are the immature flower stalks of the garlic we'll eat soon enough and are really tasty in stir fries or braised with spinach and eggs (my favourite)
  • Dessert! Since pickup is on Friday again grab yourself a treat! Pie to bring to a friend's house, a sweet loaf from Lena Horst, squares from The Nutty Bakers, bars or cookies form Grainharvest or chocolate croissants from Golden Hearth for breakfast... MMmmm!
  • Swiss Chard and Garlic Scapes from Nith Valley - just added!
  • Fish and Tofu from Ontario Natural are on the order form (look under 'other')! They were a hit in the spontaneous cooler and at dinner, so we're hooked! Please note that the fish is wild caught from Manitoulin Island. This is more than 100 miles away for those who are eating a pure 100 mile diet, but for the rest of us, it's close enough!
  • So many other great items. Check them out online!
Upcoming Events:
Herrles Country Farm Market opens Tuesday June 5th!
The Herrle's market is open and will have Ontario strawberries until their own patches are ready to pick. Read more about their strawberries at http://www.herrles.com/strawberries.htm. Please continue to keep Lydia and the entire Herrle family in your thoughts and prayers.

Thursday Market in Waterloo Square! Starting Thursday June 7th, 3-7 pm

Need something tasty and local before next Friday's pickup? This week on Thursday June 7th the UpTown Market will hold it's season opener! Come to this revitalized evening market from 3-7 pm. The new market committee has brought back some great vendors from years past and have invited new vendors as well. Now they need you to attend and buy a little something each week. Invite your friends! Check out their website at http://www.waterloofarmmarket.ca/

Grand Porch Party - Sunday June 10th, 2-5pm
The Grand Porch Party is an afternoon of awesomeness organized by local residents, and presented by the Uptown West Neighbourhood Association. It is an afternoon of environment, community and music for anyone and everyone. The event partners with Rare Charitable Research Reserve to share the love for the Grand River Watershed on Canadian Rivers Day.
