A message from Rachael:

What a lovely weekend! Longer days, almost warmer weather. Snow on the ground. I could do without the snow. Sunday we enjoyed some time outside in the garden. The covered section was balmy inside and the kale, lovage, chard and endive looked pretty happy and a few sprouts of other plants were emerging. Outside in the herb section of our garden (not covered)  the oregano is healthy and lovely and was a nice addition to salad at dinner and there looks to be some sage in good shape. Some chard was coming back to life too. Most of the rest of the garden is still covered in snow. We never did plant peas as planned.

More From These Roots

Krista has added "Family Jar" sized jams, fruit and preserves - A whole 750 mL of your favourites: Raspberry Jam, Strawberry Vanilla Bean Jam, Chai Tea Peach Jam, Wild Blueberry Jam, Cherry Jam, Pantry Peaches and Garlic Dill Pickles. She is also offering her Peach Salsa (a nice spicy sweet blend with Mangoes) for $5.  She's been teasing me about a new caramel maple pear butter that is almost ready, but has let us know that her Pears with Honey Chai Spices are finally ready to eat! They have no refined sugars as they are sweetened with honey.

Here are some highlights for the April 15th pickup:
  • Gordon's Goat Dairy - Order before this weekend!
  • Kim-Chi from Green Table Foods
  • Beans from Rounds - Stock up!
  • Flour from Oak Manor
  • Onions from Nith Valley - Nathan just found some extra in storage!

His number is 519-698-2960 and if you've never been to his farm before ask for directions. I hear it isn't GPS friendly.. =) The birds are $3.75/lb and about 5-6 lbs. They have been fed organic grain, raised inside with room to move around and will be processed at Country Poultry.

Will you endorse the Waterloo Region Food Charter?
As you may know, this winter the Waterloo Region Food Systems Roundtable has been working to develop a Food Charter for Waterloo Region. Our community consultation phase is complete and we now have a finalized Waterloo Region Food Charter! We appreciate everyone who provided feedback! We reviewed all the contributions and painstakingly re-drafted the document to incorporate survey responses.

The next step to making this document a permanent part of Waterloo Region's food policy is to seek Regional Council’s endorsement of the Food Charter. We would like to demonstrate to Council, when we present the charter to them on April 9th, that many people and organizations in our community are behind the food charter.

If you are willing to endorse the updated food charter as it stands, then please follow the instructions here to endorse the charter by April 1st.

As outlined in the link above, to endorse the charter please send an email including your personal and/or organization's endorsement to foodcharter@wrfoodsystem.ca!

Have a great week,
Maryrose and Rachael

A message from Rachael:
After being away for a week we're still eating well. We didn't buy much at the last pickup, but I'm always amazed at how well the greens hold up in the fridge and the grape tomatoes are even better after sitting on the counter for a week! Now to make a plan for Easter meals and put some local lamb in my shopping cart so that we can enjoy it with family in a couple weeks.

A note from Kevin at Snyder Heritage Farms:

Yep the Maple season is here, we got everything tapped and the sap is running. Put some long hours in the last week, but were good now. Colder weather in forecast will slow things down, and give the trees a rest.
We now have:
  • All sizes of containers in the light grade are new crop syrup
  • Medium new crop syrup might be available by the 25th.
  • Maple sugar leaf candies in packs of 5 (in the syrup section)

Some other items to check out:
  • Nith Valley has added Prickly Pear Cactus Plants
  • Harrington Lane has put the Lamb loin chops on Sale ($10 off) in addition to the items she already has marked down in the lamb section. 'Tis the season and she needs to keep the stock moving as there are more lambs to be ready in a few weeks.
  • Beef Soup Bones are available from Vibrant farms. We have a limited amount of bones available. Stock up now.

A Message from Maryrose:

Just a quick note as I want to get out and enjoy the day. It is amazing out there. The sap should be flowing today. Let’s hope the get several more weeks of freezing temperatures at night and thaw during the day. To keep the sap flowing much longer than it did last year.

I recently discovered that both of my children love the smoked fish we offer. I just ordered it for the first time. Marlo the 18 month old who is a extremely picky eater eats it up. We had been eating it for lunch which means Otis hasn’t been around to try it. He caught sight of it in the fridge and asked if he could taste it. He had a bite and said “it tastes like pepperoni sticks made of fish” It never seizes to amaze me what my children will eat if you let them try it.

I was very excited to have so many lovely greens added to my fridge after Monday’s pick up. I have been so inspired to cook with a newly stocked fridge. I pulled out my Simply In Season Cook Book and flipped through the Spring section dreaming of what is yet to come.

Spring also means there are farm babies being born and the milk is flowing. Montforte Dairy has some fresh cheeses back in stock.

 White Surface-Ripened:

Waltzing Matilda - (approx 180g) water buffalo, camembert style with balsam ash

 Blue Surface-Ripened:

Piacere - (0.8kg) Fleur de marquis styleCorsicansheep, with rosemary, summer savoury and chilies

Prato - (approx 280g) similar to Piacere but smaller and a little drier, with herbs deProvence

 Fresh:

Sheep curds - 200g

Pecorino Fresco (approx 300g)

Feta (200g)

Halloumi

Additional Items that can be found on the offering list:

  • Beefsteak Tomatoes from Floralane (first of the year)
  • Collards from Sam Bowman
  • Lamb Shanks from Harrington Lane Farm
  • We are just waiting to hear word From Kevin on if we will have any fresh crop Light maple syrup available. Fingers crossed.
Tamari, Teriyaki sauce and Soy sauce are all being discontinues from Pristine Gourmet. We only have what is in stock left and can not get any more. So if you are a fan stock up now.

I had mentioned this was going to be a quick note yet I managed to ramble on. Until next time.

A message from Rachael:

It's March!

Call me crazy for looking ahead, but we have only two more Monday pickups and then we'll be running every two weeks in May and then weekly once the STRAWBERRIES are ready! Before the pickup on the 24th will be the first day of Spring! This would be the pickup to plan a few special items for your Easter meals. We'll ask Katharina for some awesome chocolates to add so that you can offer your loved ones beautiful chocolate treats that are organic and fair trade! WIll you be serving lamb, ham or tofu? Are you celebrating a different holiday? How do you incorporate buying locally into your celebrations?

We're going through our freezer and trying to use up the frozen strawberries - but not too fast - and working on the frozen peaches too. The kids are undecided, but I've started adding some frozen peas to smoothies.
I froze some grapes this year - we'll see how they are as I haven't opened them yet!

I'd love to hear what you 'put up' for the winter. What did you love the most? What do you wish you stored more of? What didnt you get through as fast as you thought (peas for me)?

So enough about the things in my freezer that aren't for sale. Here are some awesome local foods you can get your hands on soon!
  • New crop maple syrup around the corner! Let's hope that March has a bit more snow and a slow melt.
  • Calves are being born and the milk is flowing. Look for a few new cheeses from Monforte Dairy!
  • Beefsteak Tomatoes from Floralane!
  • Asparagus in May (on the 10th, hopefully!)
  • Seedlings from Sarah's Kitchen Gardens May 24th only! Nathan from Nith Valley will have seedlings too!
  • Strawberries in June! (I think I said that already)

Hmm.. Can you see that my sales skills are lacking? So glad that you come out for more that just my emails!
