When you compare the nutrient content of spinach grown in Hamilton and Spinach grown in California what do you get? In this case they found that locally grown food *is* healthier! http://www.cbc.ca/hamilton/news/story/2012/05/09/hamilton-food-test.html.
Check out this super cool map of "The Various Varieties of Vegetables": http://popchartlab.com/products/the-various-varieties-of-vegetables. It makes we wonder where Bacon Avocadoes are grown. Also, whoever made this chart hasn't seen Nathan of Nith Valley's list of tomato varieties! (And yes, both of those are in the 'fruit' section). The 'leaf vegetables' section is cool too! Head lettuce is a subset of salad greens. Can you find Jerusalem Artichokes on the map?
What are your favourite local foods to order in February and eat in March? Here are some of my family's favourites

A long weekend is upon us! I can't complain. This is two weekends in a row that we have had an extra day with two adults around. I'm always thankful for that!
This weekend we're looing forward to Winterloo (formerly the Ice Dogs Festival) in UpTown Waterloo. The chilly weather with a dusting of snow seems perfect for skating, ice sculptures and more. We love walking through uptown finding amazing ice art. Check it all out at http://winterloo.com
Sweet maple popcorn!
We have a new and tasty snack in our house. I wanted to make candy corn, but was a bit intimidated by cleaning the pot after, so instead I popped up some of my favourite rainbow popcorn from Ontario Popping Corn (on the stove) and after it popped I sprinkled a bit of salt and a bit of the awesome Maple Sugar from Snyder's Heritage Farms. So tasty and so easy!
2% Golden Gurnesy Milk from Eby Manor Farms
When we first brought you this delicious milk from the edge of the Waterloo city limits near St Jacob's, I asked Jim and Ruth a few questions. Would he consider organic? Were they GMO Free? At that time they had been concentrating so hard on getting a bottling plant up and running and delivering to a growing market that they couldn't say yes.
This week I was at a farmer networking event and Jim came over to chat during the break. He wanted to let me know that their milk is now GMO Free. All the grain they grow on the farm has always been GMO free, and now the finishing mix they use is also GMO free. I feel lucky that we have farmers who listen and make changes based on the questions we ask!
Here are a few things we now have back in stock
- Canned organic tomatoes from ONFC Whole, diced and crushed in BPA free cans
- Organic tomato paste from ONFC - in a BPA Free can!
- Raw, Organic Apple Cider Vinegar from Flisinger's Organics
- Sweet Dill Pickles from Country Flavour and Sauerkraut too
From These Roots and Harrington Lane Farms
Krista Harrington is the awesome lady behind both of these companies. She has some specials for March:
- All Marmalades are $1 off!
- Chai Tea Peach Jam $1 off
- Ground Lamb - $7.75/lb - Regularly $8.50
- Whole rabbits - about 3 lb each now available to order!
I'm about to go looking for ice sculptures!!

Ordering ends on TUESDAY
This is a shorter ordering period and three weeks between pickups, so be sure to get your order in ASAP! You only have one day left to order. Call it practice for the faster summer season and think of the asparagus and strawberries coming soon.
Canned goods
We are putting in an order with the awesome ladies at Country Flavour this week. If you want to stock up on peach slices, pear slices, stewed tomatoes or any of their awesome jams and preserves (the cherries in syrup are pretty awesome) this is the time. If you have a favourite that you'd like to buy a case of and you don't see it on our order form, just ask! We can likely get it for you at a case price.
Garlic sprouts
Brenda still has garlic. She sent us a note about how to best handle it:
The garlic is in cold storage. The transfer to a warm kitchen will make the garlic think spring has arrived and sprouting will occur. To prevent this:
- store the bulbs in a paper bag in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator or
- peel and drop the cloves into a jar, cover with olive oil, and refrigerate. The olive oil will taste like garlic and can be used when the garlic has been eaten
Candles and Baking
So much more is new on the order form. Go check it out!
Some goodies:
- From These Roots Marmalades and Strawberry Vanilla Bean Jam on special $1 off!
- Chocolate hearts from Anna Tolazzzi for your valentine! Lovely and tasty
- Mexican night? What's better than Tamales, Tortillas, Tacos, Tostadas and Tortilla Chips from McKechnie!

A quick note about the Guelph Organic Conference this weekend in Guelph! This is important to so many of our suppliers. Details are at http://www.guelphorganicconf.ca/exhibitors/. I really wish I had posted this earlier!
MMMMMushrooms!
One of my favourite foods that seems to grow well year round is mushrooms. Those Crimini mushrooms are usually so big and juice and the 5 lb box is such a great deal that we order them regularly. We've been going through them a whole lot faster lately - why? Because of a super easy and yummy recipe that I'll share. I blame the good folks that served stuffed mushrooms at a recent community dinner. They were delish!
Stuffed Mushroom Caps:
- Preheat your oven to 375 F
- Stem the mushrooms (I'd suggest a few per person)
- Set the caps aside
- Chop the mushrooms stems
- Chop an onion or shallot
- Mix the chopped mushroom and onion together, Add some oil (or reserved bacon fat for optimal flavour)
- Add salt an pepper to taste, maybe even some herbs
- Spoon into the mushroom caps
- Optional: Top with your favourite cheese
- Bake for 10-15 minutes, until warm (or cheese is melty)
- Enjoy. Make the kids try one, but don't feel too bad if you need to eat an extra one 'for the team'
While writing down this super simple recipe, I googled what other stuffed mushroom recipes suggest, and many suggest:
- 2a - brushing the inverted mushroom caps and pre baking them for 7 minutes at 400 F
- 6a - Sauteeing the onions and mushroom stems before stuffing
- 7a - Adding ingredients like pancetta/bacon, breadcrumbs, crab meat to the stuffing
All the 'extras' sound super yummy, but sometimes simple is great!
What? New items on the order form?
Well, with our part of the earth tilting towards the sun again the days are longer and there is enough light for spinach, salad greens and cherry tomatoes! We're excited too! Numbers are limited on the greens, but more will come with time!

- Macarons from Ambrosia Pastry Co.! Special Valentine flavours include Lavender, Lemon, Spicy Chocolate and Maple Walnut.
- Smoked Whitefish - Wild caught from Manitoulin Island! So tasty!
- Apple Cider Vinegar - A great addition to salads or a great way to make bone broths even better
- Tamales, Tortillas, Tacos, Tostadas and the best Tortilla Chips from McKechnie! Fresh and Tasty!
- Buffalo milk greek style yogurt from Local Dairy... sooo rich!
- Russet potatoes in 2 lb bags from Pfenning's Organic - Awesome for baking!
- Smoked turkey drumsticks from Stemmler's. Feed the caveperson in you.
- Popping corn from Ontario Popping Corn Co. You can get their super cool Pop-A-Cob or for a sweet and salty treat sprinkle with salt and Maple Sugar from Snyder Heritage Farms
