Bailey's Local Foods ordering ends at 8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 31st

This is your reminder that you should place your order before 8:00 pm Tuesday May 31st for pickup on Friday June 3rd.
Click http://baileyslocalfoods.ca/ordering to log-in and order.
Items that you have placed in your shopping cart will be ordered on your behalf on Tuesday at 8:00pm. There is no checkout button. If you do not intend to order, please ensure that your shopping cart is empty.

Hello again,

Can you believe that ordering closes so soon?
The upside for ordering monthly was a loooong time to order. Now that we are weekly we get food every Friday, but ordering is only open from Friday night at 11pm to Tuesday night at 8pm. Isn't it lovely that your fridge doesn't get completely empty between pickups?

We've had asparagus almost every day since Friday. How about you? This week is supposed to be hot and not rainy - what a change! Hopefully the farmers will be thankful for the change and the plants will grow well without bolting due to the heat. It's such a fine line!

If you are looking for the entry for the two free passes for Forks Over Knives at the Princess Cinema, please look in the 'other' section. Sorry to those who went looking for the entry before it was on the order form!

A few things to highlight:
  • This is the last week for frozen edamame from Drumlin Farm
  • This is the last week for seedlings from Sarah's Kitchen Gardens
  • Tortillas from McKechnie are available this week again, but not for another two weeks - Have you tried their taco shells? One word of warning - once you try then you won't be able to eat the ones from the grocery store!
  • Did you see Elvina's winter lettuce last week? It was such a lovely head. I haven't tried it yet but I'm looking forward to a tasty salad!
  • If you are planning for summer grilling, consider one of the boxes from Vibrant Farms. Great value for a lot of great meat!
  • 100 mile organic spelt bread from Golden Hearth - the only truly local bread is available every week, but if we need to order at least four for them to bake it!
  • Brenda Knechtel has increased her numbers so there are more greens available for you.
Garden Party Award
Last week Theresa Schumilas of Garden Party (a local CSA) received the Premier's Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence, presented by Minister Mitchell. To celebrate the award Teresa is setting up for a special on-farm market this coming Thursday from 4 - 7 pm. There will be extra produce for people who drop by and are not members including a full range of storage vegetables (potatoes, carrots, beets and parsnips). Plus, a "salad bar" of lettuces, arugula, spinach and other greens, cooking greens like bok choy and kale, green garlic and onion, cucumbers, tomatoes, and even local organic mushrooms. Plus, Teresa will have some refreshments for you - and hopes it is a nice evening to wander through the garden and pick some flowers

Think cool thoughts!

Bailey's Buying Club - Ordering is now open for Friday June 3rd

Click http://baileyslocalfoods.ca/ordering to log-in and order. Ordering closes at 8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 31st
Please be sure to read the wavier on our website when you log in. It reminds you that items placed your shopping cart are automatically saved (there is no 'checkout' button).

Items you order are to be picked up at First United Church on Friday June 3rd between 3:30 PM and 7:00 PM. Ordering will end on Tuesday, May 31st, 2011 at 8:00 PM

From Rachael:

Welcome back to weekly ordering!!!

We're excited to be running weekly again and hoping for the weather to cooperate so that we can get on with strawberry season and all the exciting local food that follows! The up side of all this rain is that is make the asparagus much sweeter! This might be the year to try it, even if you thought you didn't like it before. Try it raw today (if you happen to have some) and if you want to save any for tomorrow, keep it in the fridge, in an inch of water, kind of like flowers - I find that a yogurt container holds a nice sized bunch.

Free Movie passes for Forks over Knives
Princess Cinemas is running
a food/nutrition documentary entitled "Forks Over Knives" which is playing June 17-23 and they want to give two free movie passes to one of our members! Here is some information on the film: http://www.princesscinemas.com/film/?id=2352. If you would like to win the passes, please add a draw entry to your shopping cart. We will accept one entry per household and will draw an entry at random for pickup at the June 10th or 17th pickup!

Here are some tasty things to look for this week:
  • Asparagus and Rhubarb - our season openers!
  • Garlic Scapes from Paul Bowman
  • Tortillas from McKechnie - after this they will be available fresh every second week and we will have a small amount + frozen tortillas in the 'off weeks'
  • Pasta from J&D Peters - available every two weeks
  • Seedlings from Sarah - This will be the last week they are available!!!
  • This is also the last week for frozen Edamame from Drumlin Farm, so if you've enjoyed it with the great recipe that Gerry provides on each bag, stock your freezer!
Speaking of freezers, is yours getting empty? If you put away berries and froze other foods in season last year, or canned tomatoes how did you do for estimating the quantities vs. what you used? We still have lots of strawberries frozen, and smaller amount of blueberries and raspberries too. I think I'll make some strawberry jam before it gets too warm and this year's strawberries are ready. They are always great in smoothies for breakfast. On our pantry shelf there are a few jars of tomatoes and grape juice - and only a few peaches too. This year I'll break my one ingredient canning rule and make salsa! It's been lovely experimenting with putting away local food and this year I hope to share some of my lucky discoveries from last year. A few examples are the frozen peppers and corn (frozen raw, off the cob) as well as frozen watermelon and cantaloupe that were such a treat over the winter. I'd love if you would share your local food successes and recipes too!

Aura emailed us a great recipe that she came up with that uses local Rhubarb and bran and shared it at http://foodaura.wordpress.com/2011/05/24/rhubarb-honey-bran-muffins/. I've already heard from another friend who made the muffins after reading Aura's blog!

You may soon give up baking in a hot kitchen for ice pops (Popsicles) and grilling outdoors. If you have children and they like ice pops like mine do, why not try making ice pops that are both healthy and hard to resist? We have a couple ice pop molds (you can get plastic ones for as little as a dollar or get fancy stainless steel molds in town too - let me know if you are looking for a local source for these) and I'm always filling them with our very own Pear Apple Sauce! The ingredients are apples, pears and steam - no sugar added! I get the extra on my yogurt too! I went through so much in that hot snap, that I thought offering a deal on a case would be handy for you!

A few items that we are offering on sale:
  • Cases of Pear Apple Sauce - It's like getting 2 jars free!
  • Mild Chili Sauce from Country Flavour - a great condiment for meats!
  • BBQ Relish from Erma Martin - What else would you put on your burger or dog?

Spotlight on The Cider Keg!

This week Wendell, who is the amazing man who picks up most of your food each week, called and said his wife and her mother wanted to take a drive in the country! They went to Norfolk and had a lovely day visiting Simcoe, Port Dover, Pristine Gourmet in Villa Nova (Waterford) and The Cider Keg in Vittoria. While at The Cider Keg, he picked up more Sparkling Cider as well as some of the Apple Cider Vinegar and Apple BBQ Grilling Sauce that the Cider Keg makes. It sounded so good we had to get some!

Have you tried the Sparkling Apple Cider from The Cider Keg yet? We're going to try to keep some chilled at the spontaneous table this summer if you get thirsty while you're picking up your order. It's not too sweet and a tasty alternative to other carbonated beverages that is free of alcohol and added sugar. In addition to Sparkling Apple there are four additional flavours to choose from: Apple Cranberry, Apple Peach, Apple Raspberry, and Apple Strawberry Rhubarb!

I asked Cheryl to give us some ideas of how to use Apple Cider Vinegar and their Apple BBQ Sauce. Here is what she sent (Also, see the recipes at the bottom of this email):

Apple Cider Vinegar - Crafted from Cider Keg Fresh Apple Cider. Highly aromatic with a mild flavour. A wonderful addition for salad dressings and marinades.

A good apple cider vinegar has many benefits for human health. The particular natural array of
acids and minerals helps the body maintain it's own proper acid balance, and helps with mineral
metabolism, particularly with calcium usage. A good "tonic" is to take 2 spoonfuls in a glass of
water every day, though using it on a more or less daily basis on foods will work as well. It's
perfect for oil and vinegar dressings, and enhances the flavor of many things (even desserts, fruit, meats and fish) if a small amount is added when cooking.
  • Add a bit of vinegar to fruit gelatin to help hold it firm.
  • Excellent replacement for lemon on fried and broiled foods.
  • Add a bit to the cooking water to keep cauliflower whiter; potatoes too.
  • Add to the water when boiling eggs and the whites don't leak out shell cracks.
  • Add a small amount to the cooking water for fluffier rice.
Cider Keg Apple BBQ Grilling Sauce - Fire up the grill and enjoy this mouth watering grilling sauce. It's sweet and tangy flavour enhances all your bbq dishes. Use as a marinade, while grilling or as a condiment.

If you are looking for a certain product and it isn't available, we have some suppliers who are not available every week in the summer. Some of these include:
  • Soiled Reputation - Antony says that the weather plus some greenhouse issues have reduced what he is able to offer
  • Monforte Cheese - delivered with Soiled Reputation
  • Rounds Beans - Available every few weeks
  • Oak Manor - Stock up on flour and grains every other week this summer!
  • Green Table Foods - Available every two weeks through the summer.
Here are some upcoming events you might enjoy:
  • 2nd annual Waterloo Chicken Coop Tour - This Saturday, May 28 from 11:00am to 3:00pm
A free event for the whole family! You can visit five locations in Waterloo. Pick up a map at the Waterloo Public Square on the tour day. Contact waterloohens@yahoo.ca or waterloocooptour.com for more details.
  • Foodlink has just published its 10th Anniversary Buy Local! Buy Fresh! Map. You are invited to the official launch taking place this Saturday, May 28, 10-12 at the St. Jacobs Farmers Market.
  • 3rd Mayor's Forum (Waterloo) on Building Resilient CommunitiesDon't forget to register for the final event of the Mayor's Forum Series on Building Resilient Communities! It happens Saturday, June 18th in the Turret at Wilfrid Laurier University! Costs have been lowered to only $15 (with a 20% discount or more for those that need it.) Registration details at http://resilientwaterloo.ca (and an awesome 7 minute video of what happened at the first event) and http://www.transitionkw.ca/mayorsforumseries.html.

And now for those recipes from Cheryl:

Sparkling Vinaigrette - Cheryl Peck, The Cider Keg
It's so easy to make a quick sparkling vinaigrette salad dressing to make your salads special. Use a blender and it's done in a matter of seconds. Try adding some of your favourite fresh herbs. Prep Time: 2 minutes
Ingredients:
  • 1/4 cup Cider Keg Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1/2 cup Cider Keg Apple Raspberry Sparkling Cider
  • 1 cup Pristine Gourmet canola oil
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper
  • Pinch sugar, optional
Preparation:
  • Whisk together canola oil, apple cider vinegar, and sparkling apple raspberry cider. (You may use a blender for this if you wish.)
  • Season to taste with salt and pepper. If the vinaigrette tastes too sharp, add a pinch of sugar and whisk until dissolved.
Refrigerate any leftover salad dressing and use within 1 week.
Yield: 1-1/2 cups, enough for 6 to 8 salads

Pulled Pork Sandwiches
An easy and delicious meal.
Ingredients:
  • 4 lb pork roast
  • 2 Ontario Spanish onions, sliced, divided
  • 1 Ontario Cooking onion, chopped
  • 5 or 6 whole cloves
  • 2 cups water
  • bottle of Cider Keg Apple Grilling sauce
  • salt and pepper
Preparation:
  • Place one sliced onion at the bottom of Crock Pot.
  • Stud pork roast with cloves and season with salt and pepper.
  • Place roast in slow cooker on top of the sliced onion. Cover with the second sliced onion and add enough water to fill Crock Pot two thirds of the way.
  • Cover and cook on low 8 to 12 hours.
  • Remove roast. Remove and discard cloves, bone and fat as well as any water, onions and grease remaining in pot.
  • When pork roast is cool enough to handle, use a fork or your fingers to pull it apart until the entire roast is shredded.
  • Return the pulled pork to the crockpot. Mix in the chopped onion and BBQ sauce and cover. Heat on high for 1-3 hours or until the onions are soft.
  • Serve on large, crusty buns with a Cider Keg Apple Grilling Sauce. Garnish with Local pickled Asparagus spears, thinly sliced raw onion and pickled peppers. Serve with crisp, homemade slaw.

Please be sure to read the wavier on our website when you log in. It reminds you that items placed your shopping cart are automatically saved (there is no 'checkout' button).

An email from Rachael:

Hi Everyone,

My daughter asked on Saturday if May showers bring April flowers? I pointed out the lovely flowers that the April showers did bring (yay for flowers!) and also that I hoped that these May showers would bring us lots of fruits and vegetables in June and July! Its hard to be positive in cold and rainy unseasonal May weather.

Eggs are coming today!
You might still have a chance to get some if you let us know at http://tinyurl.com/mayeggs.

Traditional Foods' eggs are nutrient dense Omega Plus eggs. Five Star Seeds from Chesley, ON supply our chicken feed. The feed comes from home grown crops, and from pre-mixes from Bio-Ag of Wellesley ON. See www.bio-ag.com. Our chickens are fed GMO Free crops, and some organic feed, with kelp and flax seed as part of their ration. Our chickens are free-run, indoors. Besides GMO free, their feed is also hormone, drug, and animal by-product free.

Asparagus time!
We stopped by Martin's Family Fruit Farm on Saturday (in the rain) to pick up the last of their Honey Crisp apples (they had a limited amount after finding a bin in the cooler!!!). While we were there, Andrew picked up some local asparagus and fiddleheads (Mmmm... delish!). If you're looking for asparagus and don't have it in your own garden, definitely find some before the 27th when you pick up your first order (we'll have lots then!) Go to Martin's or Barrie's Asparagus Farm or Seven Shores (right in town) to get local asparagus. You may pay a bit more than you would at the grocery store, but Tim Barrie's asparagus has all green stems, so you don't have to cut off the white from the bottom... the price might be more comparable if you take that into account!

Only order for ONE week!
I started my order this month and had to stop what I was doing quite quickly. Over the winter I've gotten used to ordering 4 tubs of yogurt and 7 pints of grape tomatoes to last our family a whole month, but now that we're going back to weekly pickups I need to change that mindset. If you made the same mistake that I did, please double check your order amounts! The yogurt will last, and we do love big orders, but why fill up your fridge when you can pick up more fresh food on June 3rd?

See Bailey's in print:
  • The Buy Local! Buy Fresh! 2011 map has just been delivered by Foodlink! We will have copies on hand at our pickups - please make sure to get yours if you don't already have one.
  • The current issue of Taste Magazine is out. We are lucky enough to be featured in one of the articles about Local Programs connecting farmers and city customers - The amazing photos from one of our pickups last summer sure make local food look sexy! You can check out the magazine cover at http://www.grandmagazine.ca/tastehome.html
A few ordering notes:
  • Gordon's Goat Dairy will be on a 4 week delivery schedule over the summer. We will be closing ordering for their cheeses on Wednesday May 18th at noon so that we can have it delivered for this pick up. Don't miss out on the tastiest goat cheese ever! It's amazing melted in an omelet and easy to stock up on enough to keep you happy until June 17th!
  • Stemmler's tasty sausages, deli meats, wieners and prepared food has been added back to the order. The Jumbo Natural Beef Wieners are amazing cooked over a bonfire - Yum! No nitrates either!
  • We have a limited amount of organic lean ground beef from Vibrant Farms available. Stock up to make your own patties for the BBQ season!
  • Nutty Bakers items are temporarily unavailable. We'll let you know when we are offering Anna's products again

Hello Folks,

From Rachael:
An apology to those who tried ordering last night at 11pm. There were some errors that needed fixing and since this ordering period is so long we fixed the errors before opening the order. Sorry for any inconvenience! We still haven't gotten updated information from some suppliers, so we'll let you know when we're adding new things and when we confirm some of your favourites such as Stemmler's which will be back on the order form as soon as we get their new price list!

Between pickups we have a few suppliers with extra product that can't wait. If you are interested in eggs as well as spinach and mesculn mix too(!!) let us know by filling in the form at http://tinyurl.com/mayeggs.

Have you had any luck finding local food at markets? Another market to check out is the Waterloo Farmers and Crafters' Market which is held Thursdays at the Waterloo Public Square. It is set to begin on May 19 this year. Come out for great seedlings, honey, cheeses and crafts. As the season progresses, fresh local fruits and vegetables will be available too!

From Maryrose:
Did you miss us? I wish I could say we have been getting a bit of R & R before the new weekly season begin on May 27th. We have been working behind the scenes trying to get as organized for a successful busy season ahead of us.

It has been really hard thinking and waiting for Spring with all the cold rainy weather we had in April. The growing season will be a bit late because of this, but hopefully once it starts it will be wonderful! I am excited to get my garden going this year. There will be seedlings available from Sarah's Kitchen Gardens starting this pick up (please read her note below). I was lucky enough to get Eva Weber's sprouted Dutch onions in the ground a few weeks back when we had a few warm days in a row. They are growing very well so far. I tried planting some peas from seed but I am not sure they have germinated.

We have the very first spring harvests to offer you on May 27th.
  • Asparagus and Rhubarb from Barrie Brothers and Paul Bowman
  • Cinnamon Honey from Bauman Apiaries
  • Winter Lettuce From Elvina Bauman

Here is a note from Sarah about her lovely seedlings:

Hello Bailey's Members,

I'm so pleased to be growing seedlings for you again this year! I've had some positive feedback from last year, and a few requests, so I've done my best to accommodate. I'm particularly excited about the Variegated Fish Peppers, which are a hot variety with variegated leaves and multicolour peppers. I can't wait to see them growing! Peppers love containers, so if you are growing on a balcony they would love to come home with you. I also have patio pots available, large 15" diameter fibre pots, 10" deep, that are planted with a variety of items. You can even customize your own pot - just send me an email and I'll put it together for you. Also email if you have any questions about what is being offered. SarahsKitchenGardens@gmail.com is my business email that I check personally. Thanks for your support, and happy growing!

Sarah

VOTE Today!!! and Eggs before the next pickup?

Hello Bailey's Members!

How are your food stores lasting? We have a few pints of grape tomatoes left and I think we're okay for yogurt and cheese. I just heard that Floralane now has the first crop of fresh green beans grown in their greenhouses! If you're by their on-farm store in Elmira consider grabbing a pound for me too!

If you are looking for local food before our next pickup on May 27th visit the 'Find Local Food' section on Foodlink's website: http://www.foodlink.ca/index.php?p=food_maps/map.

Need eggs?
Since the chickens didn't listen well when we told them there was a 5 week break, If you want Eggs from Traditional Foods before the next pickup on May 27th please fill out the form at http://tinyurl.com/mayeggs.

Federal Election day on Monday, May 2nd!!!
I encourage you to vote TODAY!!!!! If you don't know where to vote, enter your postal code here: http://vote.ca/en/ or here: http://www.elections.ca/scripts/pss/FindED.aspx?L=e and find out!

Aura wrote a note encouraging people to vote and I'd like to share it with you:

I have been thinking a lot about the upcoming election. What determines how people will vote or not vote?

So far only one candidate has reached out for my vote. How many have reached out for yours?

Living in a country that has never experienced a truly tyrannical government we take our political system for granted. I experienced an election in Uruguay many years ago and voting day was amazing. Everything was closed, except the polls and there were line ups down the street. A country that was ruled by a dictatorship, where artists and the left had to flee, took such accountability and respect for the vote.
Lets make political history in Canada this coming Monday. Get out and vote. Vote for the person who represents your interests. Vote for the underdog even if they never win, because they can NEVER win if they don't get the votes.

On election day, appreciate the fact that we have the freedom to vote for who we want; that we have a political system that by in large doesn't oppress prosecute us; that every vote does count and yes that includes YOURS.

Have a wonderful week and I'll email again when the order form opens on Friday!
