An email from Rachael:

Happy Spring!

Today we raked some of the lawn, walked to gymnastics and celebrated Spring with an inaugural visit to DQ (brrr!) A great way to celebrate the equinox!

Now I've realized that I don't have anything in my shopping basket and need to order some of the staples we rely on. I know I've missed out on spinach and eggs, but I'm hoping for some spontaneous items just like many of you are!

A few changes since the last time I sent the email and some nudges too:

  • Last chance for orange carrots - We have 400 lb available from Cedar Down Farm in Neustadt - These will be the last of the organic orange carrots for a while and they should store well in your fridge!!
  • Some of the last organic apples from Apple Creek Farm too!
  • The end of last year's Amber syrup from Snyder Heritage farm is on the order form. All the rest of the varieties should be this year's new crop!
  • There is still lots of salad mix that should be available. It lasts well in the fridge so get enough for 3 weeks!
  • 100 mile organic spelt bread from Golden Hearth for the ultimate truly 100 mile bread

  • Please check our facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/baileyslocalfoods if you want updates between emails!

    See you Monday!

    An email from Rachael:

    Hi Local Eaters!

Ordering is open for just over a week more. We've made this ordering period a bit longer so that those who enjoy March Break can still get an order in! If you are going somewhere tropical enjoy the local fruits that we can`t grow here and maybe bring some back for the rest of us!!! Have you ever tasted a local banana allowed to ripen on the tree? They are completely different than an imported banana!

    Stand up for our Farmers

Kelly is one of our Buying Club Members and she emailed me a few days ago (March 4th) and asked that I share information about the moratorium on Genetically Modified Alfalfa. I would write more, but her note is concise and links to lots of information.

My name is Kelly and I am a member of your buying club. I am so thrilled to be able to support my local farmer and get excited over the abundance and variety of the beautiful food we have in Ontario. I have become an advocate of keeping our food supply safe and was wondering if you would be willing to help spread the word.
I am including a link to an email I received today from CBAN. A motion was tabled in parliament yesterday calling for a moratorium on the approval of genetically modified alfalfa in Canada. It is imperative to our farmers that this moratorium happen!

I am hoping that you would consider sending this to other Bailey's members so as a community we may raise awareness and work together to keep our food supply safe and protect the livelihood of our farmers. The link has a great cartoon and the info is well explained.

Country Flavour items by the case!
Just a note to let you know that this is a great time to order cases of items that you love! We will be able to offer Country Flavour items by the case this pickup so stock up on peaches, jam and more!

A few other things you might like:
    • Golden Hearth Baking - They're baking especially for us on Mondays and and even increased the number of loaves they'll bake (but only so many fit in the oven)
    • Gordon's Goat Dairy - for exceptionally creamy goat cheeses made from the milk of their own goats.
    • Mmmm tortillas from McKechnie! Great to wrap up your lunch or enjoy the chips smothered in chili and cheese! I just added their new 10" LARGE wheat tortillas to the order form too if you`d prefer more stuffing inside!
    • Monforte cheese - I still need to add some more varieties so keep checking back! Chipotle Cheddar is one of the new varieties now available.
    • Nutty Bakers - Anna is introducing a few new items and wants to visit and let you taste her lasagna and new pies on the 28th! Look for two new pies that are the Nutty Bakers` own creations. Cajun pulled pork with pork from their farm as well as Chili 'n Cheddar, ground beef chili with cheddar on the pastry.
    • NEW CROP Maple Syrup from Snyder Heritage Farms. Mother Nature has to play along to make sure we have the amazing sweetness that you love. For those of you who like amber syrup, it will be available eventually also
    • BULK Organic Beef from Vibrant Farms is still available. There is a bit of a wait for this as it is custom butchered, so order soon if you want some great grilling and roasting meat!
Since ordering opened we have added a few more items that we think you should take note of:

    Locally Milled Gluten Free Flours

I included a teaser last month about the gluten free flours now available from Jamestown Mills. You can get certified GF Sweet Potato Flour that is made from locally grown sweet potatoes. Did you know that Sweet Potatoes are an excellent source of beta-carotene, vitamin A, iron, potassium, are high in fibre and have a low glycemic load? One bag contains over 9 lb of raw sweet potatoes and it's easy to substitute this flour for 10% of any recipe you choose!

We are also offering their chickpea flour, which while not grown locally are are a very good source of fibre, folic acid and manganese as well as sorghum flour is an excellent source of dietary fibre, protein, phosphorous and iron.

There are recipes on their website at http://www.jamestownmills.com.

    Some sad news from Pfenning's.

We received news earlier this week that Wilhelm Pfenning passed away. Please keep the entire Pfenning family in your thoughts at this difficult time.

In 1981 Wilhelm and Barnhild Pfenning came from Germany to begin farming in Canada. That was the beginning of Pfenning's Organic Vegetables. In a time when there was little demand for organic produce, they understood the importance of health and the harm from chemicals in our food. Time has passed and increasingly consumers share these ideas.

On March 7, 2011, just two days before his eighty-first birthday, Papa died in his sleep on vacation in Cuba. Everyone who knew him is bereft. We will miss his wisdom, work ethic, integrity and strength. And we will always remember his example.

***Please note - Upcoming  MONDAY pickups are March 28 and April 18. Weekly Friday Pickups will resume May 27th.

    from Maryrose:

    Hello Folks,

I feel like I have just recovered from Monday's pick up. Thanks for your patience throughout the busy day. My fridge was begging for some local food. Six weeks was a long wait. Thank goodness we only have to wait four weeks this time. That reminds me - two more Monday pick ups left. We will be moving back to Fridays in May.

Our farmers are eagerly awaiting the spring to get their fields growing for us. Most of their stocks are out or running low. It has been very exciting to add new items to the offering list this week instead of only removing items. It looks like we are at the end of the squash. There are very few left compared to the surplus we have had all winter.
    • I tried Anna Tolazzi's new white chocolate and cherry bar today. She has named it "Snowbird" and it is amazing - I highly recommend it. She is amazing at pairing flavours. I wish I had that ability.
    • Paul Bowman has fresh green garlic. It is similar in size to a green onion, but with a garlic flavour. He also has many more greens available.
    • Apple Creek has some frozen elderberries available. Makes a great Cordial! You can find them in the 'other' section.
    • The stewing beef from Vibrant farms is still on sale!
    • For all those who have missed out on eggs over the last few months, we have good news. New chickens have arrived at the Traditional Foods farms this month. This means more eggs for us!
    • I also spoke with Stewart from Floralane on Wednesday. He confirms all of their greenhouse tomatoes will be available for our March pick up. I can't wait to make a Caprese Salad. Here is the recipe:

    Caprese Salad
    2 tomatos sliced (Floralane)
1 ball Fiore Di Latte - Fresh Mozzarella (Local Dairy)
    Fresh basil leaves sliced (Pfennings)
Drizzle olive oil & balsamic vinegar (you could use sunflower oil and one of the infused vinegars if you want to keep it local)
Minced garlic, salt & pepper to taste.
Arrange the slices of tomato and cheese. Place slices of basil through out the plate. Drizzle both olive oil and vinegar. sprinkle on garlic, salt and pepper.
