A message from Rachael:

I know, I know. We've barely had the December pickup and I'm already taking about January? Well, I just want to remind you that the order form is already open (and has been for a week!) so that if you think of amazing local food that you need or are close to running out of local oil, snacks or need extra veggies to fuel that resolution, if you are really glad you got three heads of lettuce or tubs of yogurt, you can add them to your order now so that it will already be in your shopping basket when ordering closes on January 7th.

I also want to talk about the storage veggies that often get forgotten. We never seem to forget carrots, potatoes or onions, but  what about Jerusalem Artichokes, Parsnips, Daikon Radish and Rutabaga?
  • Parsnips - Great roasted, but for a change you can make Spiced Parsnip & Chocolate Chunk Cake if you are feeling adventurous! I'd recommend a shallower pan and maybe half of the sugar that the recipe calls for. It was a hit with adults and kids alike!
  • Jerusalem Artichokes (aka Sunchokes) - My favourite description is from my neighbour: "I got Jerusalem artichokes this time. They're amazing! Like the most delicate potato with definitely artichoke flavour. I'm delighted." How to cook them? Oven broil them like you would potato wedges/healthy fries (recommended by Martha Wideman), mash them with some potatoes for more texture and taste! They can even be eaten raw is salads or stir frys!
  • Daikon Radish - A Milder radish and another awesome low starch root vegetable! Angie from Fertile Ground says:
    Dear Daikon Radish,
You have been a sadly neglected vegetable on my plate until quite recently. I have not adequately appreciated how much freshness and satisfying crunch you can add to an otherwise over-starchy winter root diet.
    With new-found respect,
    Your Farmer

  • Garlic - January is a great time to stock up! Keep the bulbs cold and dark to avoid sprouts!
  • Not a root vegetable, but remember squash! An great colour to add to your plate through the winter. We love Spaghetti Squash!
Another thing to think about - you can store all these amazing veggies in your fridge or cold cellar (open the bag and let them breathe a bit, or better yet, put them in some soil!) but sometimes our farmers sell out, so you might want to get enough of your favourites to last until the next growing season starts!

Enjoy the season,
Maryrose and Rachael

A message from Rachael:

Our next pickup is January 13th so be sure to stock up for family meals, New Year celebrations, back to work and school too!!  Be sure that you have enough pantry items like butter, oil and maple syrup.

Think ahead and have hostess gifts on hand. A jar of preserves, a bar of chocolate, some nuts or caramels. Give your friends a great gift that you might like to receive!

Holiday goodness includes:

  • A turkey or ham for your holiday meal. The GMO Free Turkey from Snyder Heritage Farms is the best you can buy and though we sell it frozen, you can thaw yours in 24 hours or less in water. I'd also suggest brining your bird... it  makes for a tasty meal!
  • Don't forget fresh cranberries (non local - from Ottawa) to make your cranberry sauce!
  • Chestnuts from Warner Fruit Farms to roast on an open fire (or in the oven). We're amazed at how sweet local chestnuts are compared to the imports!
  • Tasty baked goods and prepared foods from Winnie's Gluten Free are back on the order form after a quick break for her daughter's wedding. I'm taking advice from a customer and getting Tourtiƃ¨re for a tasty meal on a snowy day... my kids love Winnie's muffins and waffles. Did you see that she is now offering Lasagna too?
  • Egg nog... I have confirmed (and pre-ordered) Egg Nog from Organic Meadow for the 23rd! Order with confidence that you *will* enjoy the nog...
  • If you didn't make fruit cake, we have a few kinds to choose from. We have lots of Christmas Cookies too if you didn't have time to bake!
  • Have you picked a selection of cheese for your cheese tray? One of the newest selections we have is Cream Cheese in from Gordon's Goat Dairy (look under goat cheeses') You can choose from plain or chive flavours. We really liked it! You can cut the corner of the package and squeeze it right onto a cracker!
  • We tried the Chihuahua cheese from Local Dairy last week. It is great straight or melted.... It would be amazing on nachos!
  • Chocolate from Anna Tolazzi and Ambrosia Pastry Co. as thank you gifts and hostess gifts
  • Nuts from Jewels under the Kilt is another great hostess gift idea.
  • Salad greens. We're blessed to have farmers who grow them for us all winter! Availability is limited as they don't have enough light to grow with these short days and long nights!
  • Vibrant Farms beef individual cuts, stewing beef and ground beef are back in stock! Order now (you can even stock up!) to get your favourite cuts of pastured beef - grass fed and finished. It's organic too!
  • Harrington Lane Farms is offering BULK Lamb boxes - Approximately 15 lb of lamb for $13 per pound! You will find Lamb Chops (3-4 lbs), Leg Roast (3-4 lbs), Stewing Lamb (3-4 lbs), Ground Lamb (3-4 lbs)
  • We have Goose from Top Market Meats as well as Bauman Apiaries
  • Ontario Natural Tofu and Henry's Tempeh if your choice of protein is not animal based!
  • A treat for the furry friend in your life. Raw Ground Turkey from Snyder Heritage Farms in individual serving sized blocks (not for human consumption!)
