A message from Rachael:

More strawberries

I'm a pushover. There's no doubt about it. When the farmers say they'll have more strawberries on Tuesday and they'd prefer to sell to us than to others I loose all ability to say no. These berries are luscious and only here for such a short time. I'm going to be thankful in January that I have a few extra bags in my freezer. Also hopefully I have a couple of strawberry daiquiris this weekend to enjoy the berries we got on Friday.

Order by Monday at 9am and pick up in uptown Waterloo on Tuesday afternoon! ***If you get this email this weekend but have no access to our order form you can email me with the number of flats you want and I can add them on your behalf***

I'm so glad that I can pay farmers more. On Friday I felt rich with so many amazing strawberries on my porch. I related this to one of our farmers (who had just gotten a lovely cheque for these berries) and she was a bit humbled, but thankful that we appreciated all her hard work.

Incidentally, I was at Brenda Knechtel's farm on Wednesday visiting and picking some berries (the kids and I are hardcore... we came home with a whole 9 pints). It was absolutely lovely. As an organic farmer she only leaves strawberry plants in the ground for 2 years before ploughing them under due to the weeds, which are a big job to pull (as an organic farmer she doesn't have sprays for them). This ensures that crops are rotated as well. My son had the time of his life helping to plant a row of tomatoes and the carrots that Brenda picked while we watched barely made it home for all the snacking. Such a lovely day.

We'll be back to our regular pickup on July 5th with all the regular good things offered
  • The Nutty Bakers will be delivering monthly in the summer. July 5th August 9th, September 6th and October 4th we'll go back to weekly. If you love her amazing frozen meals stock up!
  • Gordon's Goat Dairy has their on-farm GMO free goat cheese available again. We get this at the beginning of each month, so stock up!
  • Rounds Beans - Some of the freshest dried beans available. We offer these approximately monthly also, so be sure to stock up on lentils too!
  • McKechnie tortillas. We'll be ordering all their items this week!
  • J&D Peters Pasta and noodles
Enjoy your weekend,
Maryrose and Rachael

There is no checkout button. If you do not intend to order, please ensure that your shopping cart is empty.

Upcoming dates:

No pickup June 28, Aug 2, Aug 30, Oct 18! We may add Friday June 14th if the strawberries are ready!

A message from Rachael:

Thank you for another lovely pickup day!
Despite being tired from a long day, I come home happy on Fridays in the summer. My mom noted that 'everyone leaving the church had a smile on their face' and working at the checkout this week I got to chat with many of you. That's a treat! A new member at the end of the day told me she found out about Bailey's from the Ontario Culinary Alliance website article Kitchener's Best Kept Secret: Bailey's Local Foods. It's not the first time that this Waterloo business has been pegged as one of the best kept secrets in Kitchener. Thanks for sharing. It's our favourite way to find new members!

Strawberries
We will have strawberries on the 21st. There are organic berries by the pint on the order form now, If you are looking for flats keep checking back and we'll let you know by email, facebook and twitter when we add them**! Prices for conventional berries will come down when the weather warms up. We'll make those changes accordingly. Last night when I brought our strawberries home the kids got out a 4 kg jug of nutella to eat them with. I should be embarrassed about owning that, right? Blame grandma!

(** if you don't see our facebook posts in your news feed you might consider clicking "get notifications" under the "like" check mark or adding us to an interest list.)

I'm reposting from last year (again) as the sizing on berries and cherries is always so confusing.
  • A pint is half a quart (12 pints = 6 quarts = 1 flat)
  • A dry quart is a bit bigger than a litre (2 pints = 1 quart = 1.137 Litres)
  • Dry quarts and liquid quarts measure differently
  • The darker green, more sturdy looking plastic baskets with rounded corners are litres, the lighter green, slightly larger baskets with square corners are quarts.
  • Farmers are generous and tend to top up whatever container they are using.
And one other thing - Why isn't there a big discount for buying a flat? Well... it takes a while to fill up one pint and twelve times as long to fill the whole flat (of 12 pints). We let the farmers decide the prices that pay them for the work they do!

Thanks for the cookies!

We want to thank New Moon Baking Co. for sending the cookies that we gave away yesterday! How did you like your Mackies, Ginger Snappers or Chocolate chip cookies? They are on this week's order form and are nut-free and school safe! Check out their granola and "Super Crunch Health Bar" too! If you can't find the Mackies, they are hiding in the 'gluten free' baking section.

Here are some awesome community events you might like to put in your calendar:
  1. Grand Porch Party - Sunday June 9th, 2-5pm,
    http://grandporchparty.wordpress.com/
The Grand Porch Party is held in Uptown West Waterloo, behind the Waterloo Town Square. The neighbourhood for the GPP is bounded by Euclid Ave, Alexandra Ave, Roslin Ave and Dawson St.
This is an afternoon of community, music and environment for anyone and everyone. They put together a PDF version of the GPP Map for your listening and wandering convenience! Be sure to print one off to bring with you. Looking for a paperless version? As long as you can open PDFs on your phone, you’re good to go!

A message from Maryrose:

Come on, Strawberries.

I just opened my last bag of frozen strawberries from last year.  As much as I love strawberries in my smoothies I can'€™t wait to get my hands on some fresh from the field, still warm from the sun, strawberries.

Just a reminder once strawberry season starts Bailey'€™s will be having pick ups every week except for long weekends until Thanksgiving.  As we move into the summer season of Bailey'€™s please keep in mind not every supplier will be available every week.  We will keep you informed by our emails.  Make sure to stock up when you can.  That being said. Gordon'€™s Goat Dairy is available this offering.  Have you tried their Goaterella? It's mozzarella inspired and like all of their cheese it's made with vegetarian rennet and milk from their own goats that are raised GMO free.

Rhubarb Season has been amazing so far this year.  Did you see the size of some of them on the Spontaneous table last week.  They looked like little baseball bats.  I have been completely consumed with sewing and crafting over the last week or so and have not had a chance to get mine out of the garden.  I am looking forward to some rhubarb syrup to go with soda water.  There are so many recipes out there but here is a simple one.

This heat is making it hard to cook inside these days.  A sign of things to come.  We have been eating our far share of burgers. Here is one of the favourites right now:

Lamb Burgers with whipped Feta spread on Pretzel Buns

  1. Mix 1 lb each of ground beef and ground lamb.
  2. Add and egg, oregano, garlic, salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Make patties and grill.
I also learned a trick recently.  If you make a little valley in the middle of the burger it won’t shrink in diameter as much.

To make the feta spread: take equal amounts of feta, yogurt and a cream cheese (I use Monforte'€™s Chevre) blend all until whipped.  You can add garlic if you would like.  Great on all sandwiches.
Grill up some asparagus and dinner is served.

Some items of note on the offering list.
  • We have some Dandelion Ice Cream from Mapleton's Organic Dairy.  It is a seasonal flavour that will not be available for long.
  • Garden Party has a June Mix Cut Flower bunch available.
  • Seedlings are nearing the end.  If you still have space in your garden now is the time to get them.
  • Rhubarb Macarons from Ambrosia Pastry Co.  I can’t wait to try these.
  • Oh and just another reminder about Gordon's Goat Dairy.  It is only available once a month and now is the time!
Have a great weekend,
Maryrose and Rachael
