A Message from Rachael:
Oh the local strawberries. If you go to the market or so many stores you can get local strawberries RIGHT NOW! They are amazing. Why don't we have them? Well, they mostly come from Niagara and Norfolk and we don't have a connection with a grower that grows unsprayed or organic berries and is willing to bring them to us on Friday. So we're waiting until we can buy the berries that have been grown for us close to home. If the organic strawberries from Paul Bowman will be ready on the 8th, we'll try for a pickup then, but otherwise we'll keep you waiting to eat (and freeze for winter) the jewels grown by our very local farmers. Trust me it will be worth the wait! If you can't wait, make your way to one of our Farmers' Markets or Vincenzo's or any other number of great local stores who have brought those lovely berries into town!
It's still asparagus season. I'm sure that the asparagus farmers are wishing for rain (aren't we all?). I hear that we're getting rain this week so we can look forward to some tasty sweet asparagus. Want a new way to cook it? Try roasting it like Kristin does: http://www.seasonalfamily.com/2011/05/roasted-asparagus.html
Here are a few things you should think about ordering:
- Peanuts - We need to wait until the fall for more peanuts so get them while you can!
- Peanut butter should be available all summer, but maybe I need to remind you to get some.
- This will be the last flour offering until the beginning of July! Stock up for June baking - especially fresh fruit pies!
- Maple Rhubarb jam is back! Freshly made by From These Roots.
- Pak Choi and other Asian greens. My kids love them.
- Croissants and 100 Mile Spelt bread - Golden Hearth will bake for you in this heat!
- Pasta and noodles from J&D Peters
- Tortilla chips - I love to have a bag for the kids and I to snack on!
- Basil and tomatoes... classic
- Organic Jona Gold Apples... Always a great snack
- Salad greens and braising greens from Soiled Reputation!
- Swiss Chard and Garlic Scapes from Nith Valley - just added!
Food that Really Schmecks - iPad app!Have you heard of Food that Really Schmecks by Edna Staebler? Here's a link to the new app with all the recipes plus photos and more! Hello All,
We want to first ask for your prayers and good wishes for the Herrle family. If you know local, you know that they have a family farm that grows awesome corn among other produce and sell it daily in their farm store that is set to reopen sometime in June. On Thursday afternoon, 13 year old Lydia was very badly hurt while getting off the school bus in front of the family farm. We wish her and the whole Herrle family strength in her recovery.
From Maryrose:
There have been many stories in the news about tree fruit this year (including http://www.ontariotenderfruit.ca/news.php). In addition to the tree fruit, one farmer (Lena Horst) has confirmed that her strawberry plants are not doing well. They have plenty of flowers but they are black instead of yellow in the middle. Rachael made a call to Paul Bowman to see how his berries were doing. He covered his plants with straw when he heard of the frost and his berries will be fine! Yay!! This means we will have local organic strawberries in the next month. I am down to my last bag or so in the freezer. Apple Creek has confirmed they have lost upwards of 75% of their coming apple crop. Mary was happy she canned last years applesauce so that it is shelf stable. This means those that do not have freezer space can now buy her lovely sauce to enjoy any time. Check it out in the 'preserves' section under 'pantry'!
Check out Traditional Foods new meat boxes just in time for the BBQ season. Nutrient dense and GMO free, their products are packed with nutrition. Also check out a brand new product: Frozen Quiche made from Traditional Foods eggs (in the 'prepared' section). Also available with a 'Gluten free' crust (though not from a dedicated GF facility).

Well, maybe. We'll let you know if we're running June 8th. It's all up to the strawberries. Oh yeah, they are THAT close!

A Note about the May 11th pickup:There will be lots going on at First United Church!
Seedlings from Sarah's Kitchen Gardens will be outside on her trailer. There will also be seedlings from Nith Valley Organics but we're not sure where yet. Both should be sorted by your name to make things a little easier!
Candace from Transpire Organics will have a table so you can stop by and say "Hi", thank her for the lovely food she grows for us and ask her questions about the Wellness Program she is starting this year! It's very exciting and we want you to check it out even if you don't get a chance to say chat with her this week.
What is Transpire Organic's Wellness Program? The Wellness Program builds on the ideal that food connects us to the land, to each other and to the miracle of life. It has the power to nourish all parts of our lives -- body, mind and spirit. Check out the amazing schedule here.
Seeds of Diversity will also have a small display at our May 11th pickup. They have an awesome project that you can sign up for! Read on:
Here at Seeds of Diversity, we are in the midst of creating a new and improved "citizen science" project - The Purplestem Aster Pollination Adventure (PAPA!) and we have funding to offer a select number of participants free seedlings of the plants.
In a nutshell, all the participants need to do is agree to freely accept six (6) purplestem asters (native plant) and plant them on their property (sun or partial sun). The asters bloom in August, and they count the total number of blooms on each plant. A couple weeks later, they snip off five (5) seed-heads from each of their six (6) plants and get them back to us at Seeds of Diversity. We will then pass them on to our CANPOLIN scientist who works at UoGuelph.
You might also see one of Grand River CarShare's fleet (a shiny new Toyota Matrix?) outside our pickup and a couple representatives inside to chat with.
Grand River CarShare - your local car co-operative - is hoping to expand its member base, and thus fleet, in uptown Waterloo. This week you may start seeing signs on members' lawns in your neighbourhood as part of the effort. As you may know, CarShare provides self-serve access to an additional vehicle for the trips that need it - compact, wagon, minivan, cargo van (this last is coming very soon). We've recently introduced new rates that make it easier to join. Stop by our table at this week's pick-up and we'll be happy to answer any questions you have!
We'll write more on the weekend!
Enjoy the sun!

A Message from Rachael:
Asparagus
Where is the asparagus? I called a couple asparagus farmers yesterday and they say that the asparagus is trying to come up. It really is. It grows during the day and gets frozen at night. Come on Spring! I'm adding asparagus to the order form anyway because if it's ready on May 11th the farmers will be very happy to sell to us!
Seedlings
There are seedlings for you to buy also. You get first dibs on the seedlings grown by Sarah's Kitchen Gardens. If you want to know more about any of the varieties she has set up a super cool catalog of her plants online at http://tiny.cc/jttjr. Nith Valley Organics also has seedlings for us. Stay tuned for a link to more info on Nathan's varieties!
Cheese!!!
You have until Wednesday May 2 at noon to order your Gordon's Goat Dairy cheese for the month! Also, we recently got this update from Monforte that I had to share:
- the Waltzing Matilda (ash ripened water buffalo) is incredibly beautiful this week.
- this batch of Bliss (triple creme, sheep/cow) has a slight shading of blue/green mold on the bloomy rind that does not affect the flavor
- the Pepato (soft ripened sheep with olive oil and black pepper) is available again! We have lots to go around
- Daniel is very very proud of this batch of Paradiso (washed rind, buttery, sheeps' milk). The rind is just perfect.
In the mean time, some order form highlights:
- Rounds Beans back on the order form! These will be offered approximately once per month.
- Soiled Reputation back on the order form (I missed their salad mixes and their Asian braising greens!)
- Rhubarb! So yummy stewed and in pies... (in the 'vegetables' section)
- Tasty spinach! So many farmers to choose from! Get one from each!
- New Moon Cookies. We'll have a fresh batch!
- Pear-Apple Sauce for breakfast, cooking, freezer pops...
- Wieners (beef or turkey) from Stemmler's for your long weekend BBQs
- Relish, ketchup and buns for the wieners!
- Chocolates from Anna Tolazzi for Mother's Day!
- Does Mom like to garden? How about edging tiles or plant supports from Traditional Gardener?
