A message from Rachael
The soft fruit season is soon coming to an end. This is a great time to preserve your own little bit of sunshine for those cold, winder days. If you aren't able to fit in a day of canning, we have a solution for you:
Peaches in jars
Last week we had Naamon and Selema Martin at Orchard Hill Farms prepare peaches in a light honey syrup. We used Loring Peaches from Warner's Farm and honey from Bauman Apiaries to make a 100% local preserve. Until Thanksgiving we are offering the individual jars for $7.50 each and cases for $84 (only $7 per jar) which is a huge saving from last year when the jars were $9.50 each. We'd prefer to make room for some more preserves --- maybe more Pear-Apple sauce!
Things to look for:
- Peaches in jars on special until Thanksgiving!
- We have parsnips available from Pfennings
- Elvina Bauman is offering frozen strawberries pints and frozen half pints of raspberries, both organic
- Popping corn is restocked! We have 900 g bags of traditional yellow or white hull-less kernels as well as 500 g sacks of organic popping corn. The pop-a cobs and jars of rainbow popping corn are my favourites!
- Apple Pear Cider from Warner's Farm (under beverages)
- New Ambrosia 70% Chocolate from Venezuela - Bean to Bar (chocolates)
- Mums in many colours (look in the 'plants' section)
All our Niagara fruit is Tree Run, which means that the fruit is not sent to the grading station. The fruit is picked riper (and tastier) and avoids fungicidal baths and defuzzing of peaches. The size of the fruit may be bigger or smaller as well.
Here are the Niagara Fruit we have From Warner Farms this week:
Peaches: Cresthaven, and Babygold peaches and Nectarines too
Pears: Flemish Beauty, Clapp's Favourite, Bartlett and Bosc
Plums: Italian Prune plums, German Prune Plums(smaller and sweeter than the Italian prune plums), Violet plums (large, slightly tart, green flesh), Castleton plums (sweet, soft when cooked) and Vision plums (a large blue freestone)
Grapes: Vanessa (pink, tangy, seedless), Vineland Red (large, crunchy, with seeds), NY Muscat (blue, with seeds), Sovereign Coronation (blue, virtually seedless), Himrod (green, seedless)
Be well,
Maryrose and Rachael
