Zucchini
Peas, Peas and Zucchini
Finally! We have the first of the zucchini (aka summer squash) from Brenda Knechtel in the 'vegetables' section under 'squash' and peas from three different growers!
You can get organic peas in the shell from Jonas Brubacher or organic snap peas (with an edible pod) from Lena Horst as well as shelled peas from Winfield Produce which are available in 1 lb or 10 lb bags! We love the 10 lb BULK bags to throw right into the freezer and enjoy all winter long in soups, curries and fried up with mushrooms and onions! **Please note that the shelled peas are very perishable and should be eaten or frozen right away!
Look for:
  • Strawberries. The season is short. Get your organic or conventional berries to make jam or freeze. You'll thank me in January!
  • Spray frr bouquets and edible flowers. Beautiful and good enough to eat!
  • Lighthouse Lemonade - a bottle of concentrate so that you can enjoy a refreshing drink any time!
  • Lettuce is at it's peak! Enjoy amazing salads now!
  • Tired of cooking? Make sure you get prepared food including dips, soups and kim-chi from Green Table Foods,
  • We love Mexican food in our house and it's so easy with taco shells and wraps from McKechnie Foods and J&D Peters as well as all the fixings from Taco Farm. Dinner last night was amazing with the cabbage curdito and smoky pineapple hot sauce! My kids wanted the organic blue tortillas! Don't forget the burritos and empanadas from Taste and Colour
Strawberry sizes
I'm re-posting from previous years as the sizing on berries and cherries is always so confusing.
  • A pint is half a quart (12 pints = 6 quarts = 1 flat)
  • A dry quart is a bit larger than a litre (2 pints = 1 quart = 1.1 Litres) according to  http://www.metric-conversions.org/volume/us-dry-quarts-to-liters.htm
  • Dry quarts and liquid quarts measure differently
  • We've been calling the  darker green, more sturdy looking plastic baskets with rounded corners litres, but they are quarts and you are getting 1.1 Litre of product, the paper boxes are pints and there are also smaller paper baskets which are half pints
  • Farmers are generous and tend to top up whatever container they are using.
And one other thing - Why isn't there a big discount for buying a flat? Well... it takes a while to fill up one pint and twelve times as long to fill the whole flat (of 12 pints or 6 quarts). We let the farmers decide the prices that pay them for the work they do!
Fruit from Niagara: An update from Torrie at Warner's Farm
Torrie emailed us to say "I am hoping to start cherries, gooseberries, raspberries, mulberries July 6-8. Apricots about the middle of the month, peaches and plums the end of July." We hope you are as happy as we are to read this!
