What is that white dust on my organic apples?
When I get to talking with Mary at Apple Creek Farm I always learn something new! A customer was asking about the white dust on her organic apples... What is that? Well, I remember hearing about it a few years ago, but couldn't remember exactly what it is! I checked with Mary and it's Kaolin clay (aka Surround) - organic approved for use to prevent the apple maggot fly and the plum curculio from landing for long on the apples. The insects do not like the sharp crystals of the clay on their under body and so they do not stay long on the apple.

While some think that organic farming does not allow any sprays, this is not true. Synthetic chemicals are not allowed. Pete and Mary need pre-approval by eco-cert, their certifying agency, to use ANYTHING on their apple trees including natural fungicides. Some of the extra precautions the take are spraying their trees at night as there is less wind and they get better coverage and to help avoid pollinators and beneficial insects. Also the trees have not been sprayed since mid July.
