***** Be sure to order enough for 4 weeks! *****
Our pickups this year will be every three weeks or so on Mondays: January 16th, February 13th, March 5th, April 2nd, April 23rd and May 14th, then weekly on Fridays in June!
From Rachael:
Happy Monday! (is that stretching it?)
It smells like pine (fir?) when I vacuum, even though the tree is down and most of the decorations have been put away. Most kids are back to school and the sugar high has mostly worn off.
How have your food stores been holding up? Did you get enough eggs and yogurt? I let some greens stay in the fridge a teeny bit too long to enjoy as salad, so I braised them instead. Sautee some garlic in sunflower oil, add the greens (way more than you think - at least 1/2 lb) and cover, stirring occasionally until dark and wilted. Add a bit of salt and pepper and they are addictive. We had Spinach and tatsoi beside pasta the other night and some arugula the other morning with eggs. Yum. Leafy greens are a great source of calcium!
We were at the Kitchener Market on Saturday getting some more eggs and to run into people. Kathy was surprised that we shop at the market... There are lots of great places to get local produce between pickups and the markets are about the best! Let us know your favourite places to shop for local foods in the winter so that we can share them! You can even get local cucumbers (usually from Leamington - so a bit further than 100 miles) at the grocery store! All you have to do in check labels, as they look about the same as the cukes from Mexico. Between winter pickups the farmers would likely welcome you if you want to visit their form for direct sales. We are happy to send you their way. Before the December pickup we were low on Tatsoi and Andrew and the kids went out to visit Paul Bowman to stock up. We called ahead so he would have the greens ready and the kids LOVED seeing his cooler and they brought home the biggest kohlrabi I ever saw in addition to a few other goodies!
I'm just about out of Anna Tolazzi chocolate. Katharina has such wonderful bonbons and her flavoured bars are always a treat. I need to remember to always savour them slowly. Sometimes a square of chocolate is a really nice break from 3 kids for mommy. On days when we've been out in the snow on walks or tobogganing, my kids have come to expect hot chocolate for a little treat after we return. Have you tried the hot chocolate mix (in the 'other' section and the 'gifts' section if you want it is a lovely box!)? We currently have vanilla at home, though you can get cinnamon and chili flavours also. It is a mixture of cocoa powder, shaved chocolate and more (if you need the full list of ingredients, let me know), and by adding a spoon or so into warm milk it makes a lovely rich cup of warmth.
Here are some of my favourite winter items:
- Tortilla chips and tamales - wraps too! What a great snack or meal (I didn't order enough chips!)
- Winter greens. Tatsoi and living salad greens
- Roasted root veggies - potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, parsnips, turnips and beets
- Popping corn! Great popped on the stove with a little oil and ghee (clarified butter)
- Peanuts mixed with dried currants and raisins (aka GORP - good old raisins and peanuts!)
- Peach slices. Oh how they remind me of summer
- Apples. We're so lucky to have so many available!
- Apple sauce. Great to make yourself or buy the frozen organic sauce from Apple Creek Farm
- Tea - A great way to warm up!
- Yogurt for breakfast
- Cheese for pizza night
- Tortilla chips, Creme Fraiche and prepared dips
- Bread and other baked goods (you can freeze your favourites)
- Flour and grains to bake your own treats!
- Apple cider frozen in bags or sparkling for a treat
- Dried herbs
- Butter, Oils and vinegars
