A Message from Rachael:
Easter Chocolate
For those of you who like to celebrate with chocolate, why not enjoy beautifully crafted, fair trade organic bunnies and eggs this year? I promise it will taste great! We have lots of options including lovely post cards and the killer chick - complete with bloody bunnies. Katharina has a very dry sense of humour... You can see them on our facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/media/albums/?id=73910308689, you don't even need an account!
Maple syrup and Tomatoes
First, I want to let you know that the maple syrup at this pickup will all be new crop! I'm stocking up on 1L mason jars! Last year I bought a 4L plastic jug and then canned the syrup in 500 mL mason jars - This year I'll let Kevin do the work! Maple syrup stores best in the freezer, but I found the mason jars were fine on the shelf of my cold cellar.
On Friday we went on a Maple Syrup Tour with a group of home learners. The sap had long dried up, but it was so cool to see the latest in maple syrup technology of plastic hoses and a vacuum tank (only a few pails left!) mixed with the classic wood fired evaporator. This year most maple syrup farmers got 2/3 of their their harvest, but last year was a bumper crop, so we should be fine for supply.
Since we were in the Elmira area, we decided to stop in at Floralane for a visit and some tomatoes! It was great to see Stewart and he proudly showed me his tomato greenhouses. He has 8000 plants that grow all year round. He replaces them in December and the new plants start producing again in March. It's an amazing setup - the photos I took do not do it justice (but you can look at them at https://www.facebook.com/media/albums/?id=73910308689 also).
Remember:
- Shallots - like onions, buy milder. Such a treat sliced thin on pizza!
- Crackers from Barrie Brothers - Stone Wheat or Vegetable
- All your favourite early spring greens
- Blue potatoes from Pfenning!
- Fresh prepared food from Cafe Pyrus
- Baked goods and sweets - Have you tried the 100 mile spelt?
- Preserves - Buy in bulk this week!
- Tortillas, tamales tostadas and tacos!
- Yummy cheese including Waltzing Matilda - a camembert style from water buffalo milk
- Nutty Bakers meat pies and desserts too!
