A message from Maryrose:
Hello Folks,

I want to thank everyone who had an order last Friday for their patience as we were a little short staffed.

I spent a big part of the weekend recovering from such a great pick up.  We work really hard to bring you such wonderful locally grown and produced food.  At the end of this month it will be three years since I partnered up with Rachael.  Time has flown by.

We have spent the last three years growing our families and this company.  Thanks to everyone who has supported us and this food movement.

There are several additions to the offering list this week.  Here are some of them:
  • Lester and Irene Brubacher have added Curly Endive, large pumpkins
  • Floralane has added several pies including Pumpkin and Lemon Meringue. They have also added cinnamon buns, coconut and chocolate chip butter tarts, and several types of squares.
  • Garden Party has added a juicer mix of vegetables - it makes 1.5 litres of juice or so.  Also a veggie grab bag for those who don't want to decide.
  • Taste and Colour (formally Casa Salsa) has a mole sauce added to their offering.
  • Lena Horst has a few new squash varieties available.  Sweet Mama's and a Squash called Heart of Gold.  Same shape as an acorn squash coloured orange, gold, green and cream.
  • Bauman Apiaries has added safflower stamens. (Ontario's Saffron) in the 'other' section
  • New Moon has a new Gluten Free Chocolate cookie and we are fully stocked in all other varieties
  • St. David's now has individual orange peppers
  • Chocolate Turkeys from Anna Tolazzi. Available in semi-sweet chocolate, milk chocolate and bittersweet chocolate too, these beauties are the loveliest and tastiest centrepieces/desserts we've enjoyed on our holiday table. (Check them out at http://annatolazzi.com/category/chocolates/seasonal)
  • We have parsnips, fingerling potatoes and bulk eggplant available from Pfennings
  • Don't forget to order your favourite yogurt. Mapleton's Organic comes in 6 flavours: 3.9% Natural, Vanilla and Strawberry or 0% Natural, Vanilla and Blueberry
  • Very tasty Apple Pear Cider is available from Warner's Farm (under beverages) and all the great fruit below
  • Bacon from Harrington Lane Farms got two thumbs up from my family.
Here is a quick note from Theresa at Garden Party:
No frost forecast and lots of flowers and herbs still!  But at Garden Party we are tired and we want to do our fall cleaning up. So we are opening our flower and herb bed to pickers on Friday October 4, 4:00 รข€" 6:00 only. Free pick your own flowers and herbs for personal use. We still have: zinnias, celosia,  sweet William, lavender, calendula, nasturitums, sages, thymes, dill galore, rosemary, basils, tarragon and much much more.

Niagara Fruit

All our Niagara fruit is Tree Run, which means that the fruit is not sent to the grading station. The fruit is picked riper (and tastier) and avoids fungicidal baths and defuzzing of peaches. The size of the fruit may be bigger or smaller as well.

Here are the Niagara Fruit we have From Warner's Farms this week:
Hardy Kiwi aka Chinee Gooseberry is a berry or grape sized fruit that will remind you of the fuzzy kiwi. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actinidia_arguta
Peaches: Cresthaven - The last of the peaches?
Pears: Flemish Beauty, Clapp's Favourite, Bartlett, Bosc,
D'anjou and Hw623
Plums: Italian Prune plums, German Prune Plums (smaller and sweeter than the Italian prune plums), Verity, Vision and Valour Blue plums
Grapes: Vanessa (pink, tangy, seedless),
Sovereign Coronation (blue, virtually seedless), Himrod (green, seedless), Fredonia, Niagara and Concord.
Nuts are coming too!

Cheers,
Maryrose and Rachael

Welcome Autumn. Thank you for bringing us apples and squash as part of your bounty. This is the season for storage vegetables. If you want to buy a lot of squash at once, squash stores best in a single layer in a dark closet or cabinet (lots of air flow) and most will last 2-6 months. Be sure to do a little research on how your favourite food stores best... or ask and we can help!

With this cooler weather (and amazing ingredients) comes soup season. This week I made two easy favourites. Even the kids agreed!

This first soup reminded me of those tomatoey pastas in a can. The tomatoes from our garden and our farmers were so sweet. Sautee onions in olive (or your fave local) oil, Slice and sautee some garlic it briefly before adding roughly cut tomatoes and simmer with salt, pepper and a handful of basil (tear it up as you are putting it in). Our tomatoes were so juicy that I added a 1/2 cup to a cup of small pasta rings. When the pasta had finished cooking in the soup we had a lovely meal.

Leek-y Potato soup is hearty and easier than you think for something so close to the fancy sounding vichyssoise. Start by sauteeing sliced leeks (I had a bunch of 3 from Edward and Selema Martin) in your favourite oil, then chop and add a carrot or two and as many potatoes as you like. Be sure to season this with Salt and pepper. A bay leaf or other herbs would make it even better. You can sautee the veggies for a while if you need time to defrost a bit of turkey or chicken stock. Add stock or water to cover, and cook until the potatoes are soft. You could serve this as is or blend it a bit with an immersion blender. Alternatively, you could add cream, omit the carrot and chill the soup and call it vichyssoise!

Turkey Time
Now is the time to plan if you are having a turkey next weekend. If you order it for the Friday before Thanksgiving will you have enough time to thaw it? We have thawed our turkey in cold water in our camping cooler in years past (Some guidelines are at
http://www.turkeyfarmersofcanada.ca/preparation/thawing/ or http://www.examiner.com/article/how-long-does-it-take-to-thaw-a-thanksgiving-turkey-turkey-thawing-times) Are you planning to prepare the turkey in brine? (if not, consider it!)  Do you have a roasting pan big enough?

Things to look for:
  • Chocolate Turkeys from Anna Tolazzi. Available in semi-sweet chocolate, milk chocolate and bittersweet chocolate too, these beauties are the loveliest and tastiest centrepieces/desserts we've enjoyed on our holiday table. (Check them out at http://annatolazzi.com/category/chocolates/seasonal)

The soft fruit season is soon coming to an end. This is a great time to preserve your own little bit of sunshine for those cold, winder days. If you aren't able to fit in a day of canning, we have a solution for you:

Peaches in jars
Last week we had Naamon and Selema Martin at Orchard Hill Farms prepare peaches in a light honey syrup. We used Loring Peaches from Warner's Farm and honey from Bauman Apiaries to make a 100% local preserve. Until Thanksgiving we are offering the individual jars for $7.50 each and cases for $84 (only $7 per jar) which is a huge saving from last year when the jars were $9.50 each. We'd prefer to make room for some more preserves --- maybe more Pear-Apple sauce!

Things to look for:
  • Peaches in jars on special until Thanksgiving!
  • We have parsnips available from Pfennings
  • Elvina Bauman is offering frozen strawberries pints and frozen half pints of raspberries, both organic
  • Popping corn is restocked! We have 900 g bags of traditional yellow or white hull-less kernels as well as 500 g sacks of organic popping corn. The pop-a cobs and jars of rainbow popping corn are my favourites!
  • Apple Pear Cider from Warner's Farm (under beverages)
  • New Ambrosia 70% Chocolate from Venezuela - Bean to Bar (chocolates)
  • Mums in many colours (look in the 'plants' section)
Niagara Fruit
All our Niagara fruit is Tree Run, which means that the fruit is not sent to the grading station. The fruit is picked riper (and tastier) and avoids fungicidal baths and defuzzing of peaches. The size of the fruit may be bigger or smaller as well.

Here are the Niagara Fruit we have From Warner Farms this week:
Peaches: Cresthaven, and Babygold peaches and Nectarines too
Pears: Flemish Beauty, Clapp's Favourite, Bartlett and Bosc
Plums: Italian Prune plums, German Prune Plums(smaller and sweeter than the Italian prune plums), Violet plums (large, slightly tart, green flesh), Castleton plums (sweet, soft when cooked) and Vision plums (a large blue freestone)
Grapes: Vanessa (pink, tangy, seedless), Vineland Red (
large, crunchy, with seeds), NY Muscat (blue, with seeds), Sovereign Coronation (blue, virtually seedless), Himrod (green, seedless)

Be well,
Maryrose and Rachael

It's almost Thanksgiving. Have you thought about which local foods you might celebrate with? We have turkey, lamb, ham and tofu! Maybe a few fruits and vegetables too! Plan ahead to give thanks for this wonderful local bounty!

We want to welcome a new meat supplier. Here is a little info about Top Market Meats:

Whole cuts, specialized cuts, BBQ sausage, breakfast sausage, ground, bacon, steaks, chops, ribs, stewing, summer sausage and pepperettes.

What Top Market Meats is all about?
We are 5th generation local family farmers that believe in local food products and value in their worth. As a farming family we value raising local meats from our farm to your family table. Keeping with tradition and its importance on what we produce this will insure the best quality local meat products. Every animal on our farm and every product sold is raised and sold by farmer Jeff and farmer Leslie.

Check out their website at http://www.topmarketmeats.ca/

Remember all our other great meat suppliers:
  • Harrington Lane has pastured Lamb and now Berkshire Pork roasts, ham and bacon
  • Snyder Heritage Farms offers GMO Free Turkey and Chicken, Whole roasters, parts, sausage ad more! (and awesome maple syrup too)
  • Vibrant Farms - Grass fed, pastured, organic Beef
  • Snider's Pork Sausage - Links or bulk meat
  • Stemmlers - Award winning local meats, many that are allergen free (gluten dairy, soy - please ask if you need clarification)
  • Wild Whitefish and Lake Trout from Ontario Natural (from outside 100 miles)
  • Don't forget Tempeh from Henry's Tempeh or Tofu from Ontario Natural

Our new chicken Supplier - Lawrence Martin
Lawrence has raised happy chickens and wants to offer them to you. Here is what he says:
Do you have an appreciation for healthy, wholesome food?

Try our delicious chicken raised on pasture. The birds were raised in a portable shelter that was moved twice per day. Their feed was standard, non-medicated feed from our local feed mill. This helps keep our prices affordable because we believe that diet is a small part of the bigger picture.

Compared to conventional raised chickens these had a stress free environment. They had access to an adequate supply of green pasture, sunshine and fresh air. This means that they are drug free and are also free from fecal dust, found in birds kept inside.

Is it any wonder that housed birds need drugs in their feed and water to survive.

In our pen, there is absolutely no dust, zero fecal contamination. The result is a nutritious, dynamic chicken that tastes good and is fit to eat and enjoy.

Sounds good to me! All of their sausage (Country, Garlic or Italian) is available this week! You can choose to buy it as links or not!

The fruit season continues! This week we have the new-to-us Canadian Harmony Peaches. A freestone peach with yellow flesh. Juicy and sweet, but not too pretty. I liked the review at
http://www.eatlikenoone.com/canadian-harmony-peaches.htm.
Peaches: Cresthaven, Canadian Harmony and Nectarines too
Pears: Flemish Beauty, Clapp's Favourite, Bartlett,
Plums: Italian Prune plums, Violet and Castleton, limited Damson plums also
Grapes: Vineland White (small berry, green, with seeds), NY Muscat (blue, with seeds), Sovereign Coronation (blue, virtually seedless), Himrod (green, seedless)

Comfort foods.
It's the season for food that makes us feel warm. Carolyn from Snider's Pork Sausages suggests:
As the cooler weather approaches, consider making some delicious chili with our Italian sausage meat (no casings) - or use the country or garlic sausage meat, if you prefer.

Sounds good to me!
All of their sausage (Country, Garlic or Italian) is available this week! You can choose to buy it as links or not!

More:

  • Corn or flour tortillas. Pair then with Oaxaca cheese in a melty grilled sandwich and you've got an awesome quesadilla
  • Don't forget the salsa!
  • Ambrosia Caneles are back on the order form!
  • Ivan Brubacher's conventional potatoes are available again. Please note that the Yukon Gold are all second as the have a spot in the middle that will need to be cut out. The price reflects this defect that has affected many farmers this year..
  • We have winter squash available on our order form from Bowman's Organic Produce
  • Formidable Goat Cheese spread by Monforte (with with dark chocolate and habanero oil!)
  • Mountainoak Gouda - Friesian is our favourite!

  • McKechnie and wraps from J&D Peters will all be available for your snacking pleasure!

A message from Rachael:

I often snack while I'm working at the computer and I want to share with you some of the things that we sell at Bailey's that are really a great treat! Some may be a bit healthy, but that's not what I'm going for with this list. These are the items that you might want to keep safe at the back of the cupboard and hide from the kids. You might want to give something like this as a gift to a friend or family member (I'm a big fan of gifts that don't need dusting).

Here is a list of my vices:
  • Maple Pecans,  from Jewels Under the Kilt.
  • Caramels from Hugo and Nate (my sister was out of the country and asked about these on her return)
  • Anything From Ambrosia Pastry (Marshmallows, Macarons, bean-to-bar chocolate among others)
  • Anna Tolazzi Flavoured Chocolate Bars
  • Spuds Finest Kettle Chips from Barrie's Asparagus
  • Grapes from Warner's Farm (maybe too healthy for this list)
  • Chocolatey Peanut Clusters from Kernal Peanuts (the kids love these more than I do)

Here are a few things that are more healthy:

  • Formidable Goat Cheese spread by Monforte (with with dark chocolate and habanero oil!)
  • Mountainoak Gouda - Friesian is our favourite!
  • Raw juice from Garden Party!
  • Daikon Radish and Bok choi are available from Fertile Ground (Kim-chi season approaches!)
  • McKechnie and wraps from J&D Peters will all be available for your snacking pleasure!
Niagara Fruit
We have a few more weeks left of Peaches, Plums, Pears and Grapes! I'll send the full list on the weekend!
All our Niagara fruit is Tree Run, which means that the fruit is not sent to the grading station. The fruit is picked riper (and tastier) and avoids fungicidal baths and defuzzing of peaches. The size of the fruit may be bigger or smaller as well.
