Bailey's Local Foods ordering now open for Monday May 10th pickup in Waterloo!

Click http://baileyslocalfoods.ca/ordering to log-in and order.

Items that you have placed in your shopping cart will be ordered on your behalf on WEDNESDAY, May 7th at 8:00pm.
There is no checkout button. If you do not intend to order, please ensure that your shopping cart is empty.

Upcoming dates:
FRIDAY May 10th, Friday May 24th, Friday June 7th, Friday June 21st, Friday July 5th! We may add in another Friday in June if the strawberries are ready!
  • EDSS Twice as Sharp will be at our May 10th pick. Bring your knives and scissors so that they are as sharp as you are in the kitchen! If you take the blade off your power mower, they can sharpen that too! $3 for knives under 6", $4 for knives 6" or over, within reason.
  • As the weather improves, you can bring your bike to our pickups for tune-ups and repairs by Nav of Bliss by Bike.
A message from Rachael:

The next pickup seems so far away. May 10th is our first Friday of 2013, the Friday before Mother's Day and only a week before the Victoria Day long weekend and the unofficial start of summer (maybe the snow will have stopped by then).

So far I have a few kinds of cheese in my shopping basket. The Colby and Monterey Jack from Millbank shredded and mixed together are necessary for quesadillas around here. It's a quick lunch without much clean up. I'm also getting some pepperettes and other foods for travelling as we have a little trip in store. How about you?

The winter is a bit of a slower time for us so we have a chance to catch up and make improvements. Did you notice the new and improved pick up slips? Now your purchases are grouped by the area in the hall where you will find them and in order by supplier as well! At the next pickup all the items that you order multiples of will be a different colour so that you remember to pick up the number you ordered! I hope that this makes your pick up experience more fun!

Another of the things we're working on right now is updating our very out of date website. We're putting together a bit of information on each our farmers, producers and suppliers so that you can get to know them better. After asking you on facebook (https://www.facebook.com/baileyslocalfoods) and twitter (https://twitter.com/BaileysLocal) you want to know about items that are GMO free. Just as a quick primer, all farmers who are certified organic are GMO free. We'll do our best to find out  the farmers who only grow or use GMO free seed and products and let you know. If you have input on what you'd like to see this would be a great time to share it with us!

Just like I remind you to stock up when it's a big stretch between pickups I'll remind you that you only have to shop for 2 weeks this time. We're easing back to weekly pickups as the produce ramps up. Soon enough there will be asparagus, rhubarb and then strawberries!

Going back to Fridays means we've added back breads from Golden Hearth Baking Co, but that well unfortunately loose items from Winnie's Gluten Free Foods. Organic, stone ground flour from Oak Manor will be available on the first pickup of each month through the summer (if you mark things on your calendar you can mark May 10th, June 7th, July 5th and Aug 9th)

New Moon Cookies was recently featured in an article on Blog To. If you've ever wondered what the kitchen looks like, here's a chance to check out some action photos and see the cookies being made. http://www.blogto.com/eat_drink/2013/04/behind_the_scenes_at_new_moon_kitchen/

Community events:
  • Don’t miss the Stitch ‘n’ Kitsch Spring sale! Find unique, handmade items made by local artists on Saturday April 27th from 11am to 6pm at First United Church.
  • The film "Dirt" is being shown by Transition KW Wednesday April 24th at 7pm at the REEP hous and there's lots of seats still available.  Reserve your seat at http://tfcmovienight.eventbrite.ca/. Bailey's member Jon Spee is facilitating the discussion about the humourous history and current state of this important organic matter.

Take care,
Maryrose and Rachael

Spring?

I don't even want to talk about this weather. What better excuse to cuddle up with a bowl of popcorn though!

We need to stock up on dried beans over here. I am down to my last cup of red lentils and after this weekend's ham we might just need split peas too. Dinner tonight was split pea soup with the leftovers from Saturday's yummy ham - it smelled great in the crock pot all day!

When you're shopping the order form, look for:
  • Kim-Chi from Green Table Foods (now in the 'prepared' section - really) 3 sizes available!
  • Beans from Rounds - Stock up!
  • Flour from Oak Manor
  • Onions from Nith Valley - Nathan just found some extra in storage!
  • Spinach from Kingwood Farms - Now ready!
  • New cheeses from Monforte. Yum.
  • New Bean and Beef Tamales from McKechnie. (when you need more than their tortillas)
  • Organic Grass Fed Ground Beef from Vibrant Fams

A message from Rachael:

What a lovely weekend! Longer days, almost warmer weather. Snow on the ground. I could do without the snow. Sunday we enjoyed some time outside in the garden. The covered section was balmy inside and the kale, lovage, chard and endive looked pretty happy and a few sprouts of other plants were emerging. Outside in the herb section of our garden (not covered)  the oregano is healthy and lovely and was a nice addition to salad at dinner and there looks to be some sage in good shape. Some chard was coming back to life too. Most of the rest of the garden is still covered in snow. We never did plant peas as planned.

More From These Roots

Krista has added "Family Jar" sized jams, fruit and preserves - A whole 750 mL of your favourites: Raspberry Jam, Strawberry Vanilla Bean Jam, Chai Tea Peach Jam, Wild Blueberry Jam, Cherry Jam, Pantry Peaches and Garlic Dill Pickles. She is also offering her Peach Salsa (a nice spicy sweet blend with Mangoes) for $5.  She's been teasing me about a new caramel maple pear butter that is almost ready, but has let us know that her Pears with Honey Chai Spices are finally ready to eat! They have no refined sugars as they are sweetened with honey.

Here are some highlights for the April 15th pickup:
  • Gordon's Goat Dairy - Order before this weekend!
  • Kim-Chi from Green Table Foods
  • Beans from Rounds - Stock up!
  • Flour from Oak Manor
  • Onions from Nith Valley - Nathan just found some extra in storage!

Will you endorse the Waterloo Region Food Charter?
As you may know, this winter the Waterloo Region Food Systems Roundtable has been working to develop a Food Charter for Waterloo Region. Our community consultation phase is complete and we now have a finalized Waterloo Region Food Charter! We appreciate everyone who provided feedback! We reviewed all the contributions and painstakingly re-drafted the document to incorporate survey responses.

The next step to making this document a permanent part of Waterloo Region's food policy is to seek Regional Council’s endorsement of the Food Charter. We would like to demonstrate to Council, when we present the charter to them on April 9th, that many people and organizations in our community are behind the food charter.

If you are willing to endorse the updated food charter as it stands, then please follow the instructions here to endorse the charter by April 1st.

As outlined in the link above, to endorse the charter please send an email including your personal and/or organization's endorsement to foodcharter@wrfoodsystem.ca!

Have a great week,

After being away for a week we're still eating well. We didn't buy much at the last pickup, but I'm always amazed at how well the greens hold up in the fridge and the grape tomatoes are even better after sitting on the counter for a week! Now to make a plan for Easter meals and put some local lamb in my shopping cart so that we can enjoy it with family in a couple weeks.

A note from Kevin at Snyder Heritage Farms:

Yep the Maple season is here, we got everything tapped and the sap is running. Put some long hours in the last week, but were good now. Colder weather in forecast will slow things down, and give the trees a rest.
We now have:
  • All sizes of containers in the light grade are new crop syrup
  • Medium new crop syrup might be available by the 25th.
  • Maple sugar leaf candies in packs of 5 (in the syrup section)

Some other items to check out:
  • Nith Valley has added Prickly Pear Cactus Plants
  • Harrington Lane has put the Lamb loin chops on Sale ($10 off) in addition to the items she already has marked down in the lamb section. 'Tis the season and she needs to keep the stock moving as there are more lambs to be ready in a few weeks.
  • Beef Soup Bones are available from Vibrant farms. We have a limited amount of bones available. Stock up now.
