From Rachael:

Can you believe that August is around the corner? I'm amazed at all the tasty local food that is here.

Rat-a-tat-touille
Two days in a row, I enjoyed ratatouille. Tracy is the dear friend who introduced me to this amazing dish when we stopped in one night to watch a movie (yes, the movie of the same name). She served this tasty dish and it's all I can think of when I find all the ingredients in season. Thursday was a bit cool, so I intended to make soup with all the bits and bobs in the fridge. But after discovering zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes and peppers, I hunted up some onions and garlic, fresh bay leaf, parsley, basil and lavender and set to making a quick ratatouille (trust me, you can take hours to make this dish!). At bedtime, my son let his dad know that his favourite part of the day was eating the zucchini in the ratatouille... high praise! I loosely followed the recipe here. Today, my mom found more eggplant and tomatoes and made a similar dish to serve on pasta. The kids loved it!

Enjoy the next two weeks. I'll send some reminder emails as we add some fabulous items that are ripening as the farmers become sure that they will be able to harvest leading up to the 10th (like sweet corn!!)

Get a quick order in now so that you don't miss:
  • Yummy cheese from Gordon's Goat Dairy. Order before August 1st please!
  • Organic flour and grains from Oak Manor. Stock up as the next time we offer them is in September!
  • Apple Creek Farms is our wonderful organic apple supplier. Due to the loss of over 75% of this year's crop they will have very few apples to sell and preserve this year. We will offer their Apple Sauce, Apple Butter and Apple Cider monthly until it runs out. They will not be pressing organic cider this year, so If you want to stock up, talk to us about a bulk order.
  • Have you found the Organic Ice Cream from Mapleton's Dairy on the order form yet? We only have a small amount as the freezer is already full, but it was such a hit that we will offer it again when we can.
  • Manitoulin Fish (Fresh and the super yummy smoked) is available with no limit!
  • Green Table Foods has added some Gluten Free baked goods to their offering list as well as a few new items. Their Quinoa Tabouleh is one of my favourites!
  • Country Style Pork Sausage from Snider's Pork Sausage! If you tried it this week at First United you can add some to your next order - It's even better on the BBQ, I hear! (The Folks at Breslau are lucky- they get samples every week!)

I'll leave you with a lovely article from The Record about our dear Wendell Bailey: Wendell always tried to do the right thing. We are honoured that Wendell found joy in his work with us!

What a wonderful time to eat local,
Maryrose and Rachael

A Message from Rachael:

It was pointed ou that my fruit descriptions did not match up with the fruit we are offering this week (Oops! So sorry!) - Also the Early Golden Plums are finished and we have Shiro Plums available now! See their description below also!

 Things to order this week:
  • Tortilla chips for the long weekend
  • Nutty Bakers Comfort Foods
  • Peaches and Plums
  • Wieners for the campfire
  • Meat and/or veggies to BBQ!
  • Indian Gusto - Updated prices and serving size!
  • So much more!
From Mary Jane regarding fruit:

SHIRO PLUMS
The Shiro plum has a mild flavour that is pleasantly sweet and juicy! It is round yellow plum, medium in size.

GARNET BEAUTY PEACHES
The free-stone peaches will be coming soon. To hold us over until then is the lovely Garnet Beauty peach. The Garnet Beauty is a medium-large, semi-freestone peach. It has a red blush over a yellow skin and has yellow flesh with red streaks. It is a very good eating peach!

Just a reminder - All the fruit we get from Eva and Rene are 'tree run'. We do this to avoid the sorting station that insists on fungicidal baths, fuzz removal (peaches) and paraffin wax coatings!. This means some fruit will be larger and some smaller, some more ripe and some less ripe all in the same box. Eva and Rene let our fruit ripen on the tree much longer than if they were to pick it for the shippers! The shippers want green fruit and we want tree ripened fruit!!

Be well,

Maryrose and Rachael

***Order enough for 2 weeks!!***

A Message from Rachael:

Time Flies!
Can you believe that we are nearing the end of July already!? (Should I say it a bit quieter?)

I want to make sure that you order enough for TWO weeks. We will be taking Friday August 3rd off so make sure that you have amazing local goodness that will last you until August 10th! If you will be away, consider bringing some amazing local food with you or finding a local butcher, baker or farm stand during your travels.

Things to order this week:
  • Microgreens from The Working Centre - Available mixed and now individual varieties!
  • Local Fruit - How much can you eat in two weeks?
  • Bacon and Eggs for weekend breakfasts
  • A pie or some sweets... Invite a friend to share!
From Mary Jane regarding fruit:

EARLY GOLDEN PLUMS
The Early Golden plums are a smaller yellow plum with a reddish cheek. They offer a combination of zing (tartness) from under the skin with sweetness from the flesh!

PEACHES!
This early peach is the Harrow Diamond variety. It is a smaller peach that comes away from the pit quite easily (although it is not classified as a free stone). It is a very nice eating peach that has good flavour! It is a Canadian bred peach. I have to admit it is one of my favorites!

HEIRLOOM TOMATOES
Rene was happy to plant heirloom tomatoes! 3 varieties will be ready for Tuesday.. good luck choosing!
  1. The name of this heirloom tomato is unknown. We do know the seed dates back as far as Abe Lincoln. So for lack of a better name we have called them 'Abe Lincoln' tomatoes.
  2. The Purple Russian tomato is more the shape of a large Roma tomato except that it is purple in colour. Very pretty in a salad and they dehydrate well!
  3. Red Brandywine tomatoes - There are different varieties of Brandywine tomatoes but one site described the Red Brandywine to be the 'original' original Brandywine... now that is heirloom! Its heritage dates back into the 1800's.
All the tomatoes have been grown naturally and were planted in a field that was fallow for the previous two years. Needless to say they are very happy tomatoes!

ROSES
Eva and Rene grow traditional tea roses along with antique roses which are very popular in Europe! The antique roses look similar to what you used to see in grandmother's or even your great grandmother's garden! They are varieties of old that are being reintroduced by Eva and Rene.

Respectfully,
Maryrose and Rachael

A Message from Rachael:

We need rain. It isn't just locally, but throughout North America. Crops are failing far and wide. As I start to write at 2:30, the rain has started to fall. It's only supposed to be millimetres, but any bit helps. On Friday, some areas got rain, but UpTown Waterloo got barely a sprinkle. It's not just here either. Corn crops are failing in the US, Hay prices for our grass fed animals are at all time highs. Our farmers are positive, but hopeful that the fields will be watered soon. Please do a rain dance (like we did this afternoon) and pray for more rain!

Local fruit - a million words
I was so inspired by the lovely fruit on Friday that I took photos. If you would love to see the amazing blueberries, peaches, cherries in season (and a few more yummies), please see https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151108755528690.497905.73910308689 (you don't need a facebook account).

Peach Etiquette
Do you slice your peaches into a bowl or eat them with juice dripping down your arm? Eiter way, with Peach season starting (and a lot of different varieties to try) we want you to know that
to prevent bruising, the peaches are not completely ripe. Spread them out on newspaper on their side or bottom (not stem down) and not touching each other and they'll ripen over the next few days. Then you can eat them any way you like!

Lost DS
A child lost his Nintendo DS game at Friday's pickup in Waterloo. If you find it among your order, please let us know! Also we have some clip on (magnet) sunglasses that were found ages ago at a pickup. We'd love to return them to you.

Things to order this week:
  • Peaches, Plums, Blueberries, and Cherries! (Organic blueberries will be back next week)
  • This is the last of the cherries, the beginning of the plums and peaches and the beginning of Blueberries that will be available until late August, weather permitting.
  • I just added melons
  • Manitoulin fish - all varieties! Not 100 mile local, but worth offering to you!
  • Organic Tofu from Ontario Natural (stores wonderfully in the freezer!)
  • Green Table Foods items! So good! Offered this week and every other week!
  • Stock up on Tortilla chips and wraps, tacos, tostadas and tamales. Pasta too!
  • Pickling cucumbers still available in bulk! It's pickle making season! Recipe from last year at http://baileyslocalfoods.blogspot.ca/2010/08/baileys-local-foods-ordering-ends-at.html
  • Lots of bulk items from Pfenning - Beans, Potatoes, Shelling peas and more!
  • New salad greens from Nith Valley
  • More peppers from Vipul
From Mary Jane regarding fruit:
REGINA CHERRIES
We are very excited to have Regina cherries (pronounced with a hard G 'Regeena')! It is not often we have these cherries. Because they are one of the latest varieties they are often split by the rain....but not this year! The Regina cherries are a firm cherry almost crisp in texture and once again very rich in colour! They are wonderful for eating, canning, freezing and dehydrating.

EARLY GOLDEN PLUMS
The Early Golden plums are always the first plum of the season. They are a smaller yellow plum with a reddish cheek.

Today we're at Christie Digital (formerly GE) for their Employee Summer Market. I wish I could bring them cherries, but the amazing pantry items that we have will be great to sample and sell. We're always happy to bring Bailey's to your workplace if there are healthy living or information fairs. Also, if your school, neighbourhood, place of worship or any other group is looking for some prizes, please ask! We'd love to offer gift memberships (with our amazing Pear Apple Sauce, of course). Most of our marketing is by word of mouth, so we thank you for sharing us with your friends.

Check out the order form for lots of great items like eggplant, tomatoes, cucumbers, and great fruit too!

Time to make some room in your freezer for shelled peas!
These are tasty peas! We have 1 lb and 10 lb bags, so you can choose to get a bunch of small bags or one (or more) larger bags to throw in the freezer. We bought these last year and they were amazing all winter. Great in curries and soups or with fried onions and mushrooms. I ordered a 1 lb bag for eating on Friday. They are better than candy! These are very fresh and will be kept on ice. Be sure to freeze or eat them as soon as possible. You can spread them on a cookie sheet or freeze the whole bag and chip off what you need all winter long!

Things to order this week:
  • Peaches, Plums, Blueberries, Raspberries and Cherries!
  • Maple syrup to sweeten anything! Have you tried it on Yogurt?
  • Shelled peas in 1 lb or 10 lb bags
  • We'll be stocking up on jams and preserves from Country Flavour. If you want some, this is a great time to order!
  • Bok Choi and Tat Soi from Nathan at Nith Valley! Braising Greens too!

A Message from Rachael:

Hello everyone,

I hope that you are enjoying your weekend. It's great to have more reasonable weather compared to the end of the week - especially at night. Thank you all for your patience at Friday's pickup despite the heat and thank you to Alexis, our Manager in Breslau and the Breslau Local Foods Market committee for hosting a wonderful Grand Opening on Friday! It was great to meet so many of the people ordering in Breslau and so many people who joined us for the first time.

I'm so exited to add items like blueberries (conventional and organic!), beans, raspberries, organic grass fed ground beef and so much more! This is a truly tasty time of year to eat local food. Thank you for joining us!

We'll try to highlight some producers and foods in our emails. Nathan of Nith Valley Organics is working hard to bring you amazing produce. He's working on getting his organic certification too! He's very open to suggestions and when we told him we needed Asian Braising mix - he planted it! It was one of our favourites from Soiled Reputation in the past, so we are very happy to have an alternative for you! I asked Nathan to tell us about some of the new things growing at his farm:

From Nathan of Nith Valley Organics:
We have added a few new items in the past few weeks. We now offer a Braising Mix. This is a mix of tender baby Asian greens that make a wonderful and mildly spicy addition to salad or as a last minute addition to your stir fry. We also used some in omelettes. We started with snow peas, zucchini, and green peppers lightly cooked in the pan then added the eggs and just before serving we added the braising greens. For those of you who like larger Asian greens with a bigger crunch you will be glad to learn that we have a new planting of Bok Choi and Tatsoi that I just discovered hiding under the row cover. There are far fewer holes in the leaves thanks to the row cover keeping most of the flea beetles off and the stems and leaves are wonderfully tender and crunchy. The heat has made it difficult to produce lettuce and spinach and apologize for their temporary absence from the order form. We have new plantings of both on the way so be sure to check back over the next few weeks to see when they return.

Tender Fruit from Niagara
We are so excited that we have Cherries, Peaches and Plums from Palatine Fruit and Roses this week - We have Roses too. The cherries have been fabulous so far this year.

What have you been doing other than eating Cherries? Have you pitted and frozen some? Frozen any with the pits in? I hear they should be easy to halve and pick the pits out once frozen by hitting each cherry with the blunt side of a kitchen knife. Do you infused cherries in alcohol? Bake them in muffins? Have you tried making your own Maraschino cherries? The possibilities are limitless!

You will notice that the prices for some fruits are higher than previous years. This is due to the early warm weather and late frost. We are very lucky to have cherries as much of the crop in Niagara was lost, but the prices are much higher than last year. As you know, we usually add a 30% markup to the items we sell. This year we have reduced this markup for the fruits whose prices have gone up so much this year. This fruit is amazing and worth the price per pound, especially compared to full price cherries at the grocery store.

From Mary Jane:
Most of you have heard the buzz going around about Ontario fruit. The odd spring that took its toll across Ontario is having an effect on the prices of local produce. The fruit is no exception. Some prices reflect large increases as you saw with the cherries and will see with the plums. But some of the other fruit prices are only a slight increase over last year such as the peaches and nectarines. Other prices remain unchanged including the grapes.

Just a reminder - These prices are for 'tree run' fruit.

If you have some time you can read an article about food system alternatives. We are honoured to be mentioned in the article:

Be well,

What a lovely weekend. We had a lovely weekend at home, went canoeing, spent time with friends, had fun at Canada Day Celebrations and even got a swim in!
I wish it didn't have to end.

Somehow when I'm eating in season I find that I've eaten enough strawberries by the time strawberry season ends. We'll still have some this week, but that will be about it for another year. It doesn't hurt that the cherries, raspberries and blueberries are not far behind. It seems a bit late to share my favourite strawberry recipe of the year, but I will anyway. Before I do, I welcome you to share your favourite recipes for cherries, raspberries and blueberries (not necessarily all together, but it couldn't be a bad thing). Or any other local, in season item for that matter! I'm hoping to put a recipe 'blog' together so that recipes are easier to share. I'd love to hear your ideas on what you want to see.

Local Strawberry Daiquiris
Late last Friday night I was hulling 2 flats of strawberries, spreading them on cookie sheets in the freezer and grumbling about it. I tried to think of something that I'd like to make with strawberries. Fresh Strawberry pie? (http://grshortstop.blogspot.com/2009/04/fresh-strawberry-pie-cry-for-your-momma.html) Nope. Too much work. Then I thought about Strawberry Daiquiris! I don't think I had ever had a strawberry daiquiri made with fresh berries before. Google helped me find http://www.strawberrydaiquirirecipehq.com/ and, well, it was really good - better than any mix I've had! It went really well with popcorn and a few friends.

Things to order this week:

  • Cherries!
  • Chocolate from Anna Tolazzi - Last week until the end of September!
  • Order all the tortillas, chips, tacos, tamales and pasta you want this week!
  • Get some Empanadas and dips from Casa Salsa for a complete meal.
  • This is the week to stock up on cheese from Gordon's Goat Dairy.
  • Honey - Great in iced tea!
  • Fish (in the 'other' section) - we have some wild caught fist from Manitoulin Island. It's not 100 mile, but we think it's worth offering to you.
  • Sparkling cider - so refreshing chilled on a hot day
  • Pickling cucumbers in 3L baskets (I feel a recipe for counter top pickles coming on)
  • Golden Guernsey Milk - My kids like it!
  • Salad greens, Asian greens, Fennel and Kohlrabi
  • 100 mile organic spelt bread from Golden Hearth - It's our only 100% local bread!
  • A bag of scones or croissants to go with your tasty bread
  • Yogurt to make a tasty fresh fruit parfait
Enjoy this short week,
Maryrose and Rachael
