Hello Local Eaters!

Are you spending this weekend in town or heading somewhere else? In the past we have found that running a pickup on the long weekend is a pretty quiet event as most of you are away - and, truth be told, we like having a weekend 'off' every once in a while too.

We have been working on the order form for the upcoming August 5th pickup and hope that if you're back in town by then you'll get a chance to order some of your favourites!

Green Table Goodness
This is the week for stocking up on tasty prepared foods from Green Table Foods. They have a wonderfully long 'fridge' life before the expiry date. If you spent last weekend at the Hillside Festival, I hope you visited Green Table Foods and enjoyed their tasties! I *finally* added back all the AMAZING Gluten free items that Green Table Foods has to offer. I'm looking forward to trying some of the new ones myself! Even if you don't need to eat Gluten Free I'd suggest trying some anyway. Eleanor has this magic touch and who knows, you might feel better without gluten!

Nutty Bakers Update
One of the things we added was Gluten Free Pot Pies, and since people have been asking what happened to the AMAZING pot pies from The Nutty Bakers, I'd like to take a minute to share Anna's story with you. We had been holding out hope that we could offer her products again, but as we are considered a wholesale suppler this is not a possibility without major work and expense on Anna's part.

Unfortunately, The Nutty Bakers are not able to provide Bailey's with any of our pre-cooked meat products due to regulations by OMAFRA (Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Foods and Rural Affairs). We were unaware of these regulations which would require us to obtain a meat plant processing license. We consider ourselves a bake shop and these new regulations would change our day to day activities drastically. We would like to stay as a small business which we can continue under the Health Unit regulations and sell directly to the consumer.
The Nutty Bakers have decided to focus on the Farmers Markets that we currently sell at. You can find us at the Stratford Farmers Market and St Marys Farmers Market on Saturdays and on Thursdays at the Exeter Farmers Market. OK, on to this week's highlights!

  • We will have peaches this week. I'll add them on the weekend once we know what the variety is!
  • Green Beans (and yellow beans and purple beans) are ready! Anyone know how to prepare the purple ones so they don;t turn green?
  • Lena has some crops ready now! Look for her broccoli and bouquets!
  • Theresa from Garden Party is offering a garlic sampler... did you know there was a difference?
  • We're now offering BULK wheels of cheese from Monforte Dairy! Love the Toscano? Get more than a single serving! (one of the regular pieces would be 2-3 servings for my 4 year old if he got to serve himself)
  • Kevin at Snyder Heritage farms has Necks and Backs (great for soup!) and Whole turkey breasts available again!
  • Soiled Reputation will continue to have their YUMMY greens all summer even when it gets too hot for head lettuce. Antony is also offering Purslane this week! Don't know what that is? We learned to love it as part of our CSA share a couple years back. "The plant is rich in vitamin E, vitamin C and beta carotene, and quite high in protein. Most noteworthy of all, it is considered a better source of essential omega-3 fatty acids than any other leafy plant." (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/17/AR2006051700543.html), it goes amazingly in your favourite beet or potato salad - or any other salad for that matter! In truth, you might recognize it best as a weed from your garden.
  • Organic blueberries from Walker's are on the order form. With the very dry July the season may not be very long, so despite the limits order what you need! If you would like a large amount, you can email us and we'll try to accommodate if extra are available.

We will not have a pick up on Friday July 29th, so please order enough for 2 weeks (three if you need McKechnie Tortillas and J&D Pasta) and we'll see you again on August 5th.

You can stock up on Country Flavour this week if you want Edna and Melinda to preserve for you!

There is a small chance that the peaches may not be ready on Friday, but we will let you know!

Here is a note about the peaches and other fruits and roses that we get from Palatine:

Available for this Friday are Apricots, Early Golden plums and cut roses...both antique and hybrid tea roses! We may have peaches but I won't know until tomorrow.

The first of the apricots are ready! The secret to a good apricot is to let it ripen on the tree (tough to do when it is coming from California!). Rene said they have to be very particular when picking the apricots because you just have to know the right 'feel' to know that it is ready. Rene and another trusted worker are the only two allowed to pick the Apricots on their farm!! These first apricots are smaller in size but they are quite sweet! They are golden-orange with a red cheek, high in vitamin C and packed with beta-carotene.

Also ready (and happy with the hot sunshine) are the Early Golden Plums. The Early Golden plums are always the first of the season. They are a smaller yellow plum with a reddish cheek. They offer a combination of zing (tartness) from under the skin with sweetness from the flesh!

The early peaches are on the brink of being ready but just not quite. I will send another email tomorrow if we will have some for Friday. If not then they will be ready for next Tuesdays run.

Just a reminder - All the fruit we get from Eva and Rene are 'tree un'. We do this to avoid the sorting station that insists on fungicidal baths, fuzz removal (peaches) and paraffin wax coatings!. This means some fruit will be larger and some smaller, some more ripe and some less ripe all in the same box. Eva and Rene let our fruit ripen on the tree much longer than if they were to pick it for the shippers! The shippers want green fruit and we want tree ripened fruit!!

Eva and Rene grow both the traditional tea roses and antique roses! The Antique rose is a little different looking then the tradition Tea Rose we are accustom to. The Antique rose is meant to have a large center rose that opens accompanied by several side buds which may or may not open. This offers contrast for bouquets!
Both the Tea and Antique roses have a lovely fragrance since they are grown our-doors and are bred for fragrance. The roses grown in hot houses, as opposed to out-door roses, have been bred for longevity since they never know when they will be purchased. Hot house roses usually have a thicker leaf/petal to accomplish this characteristic! But when they do this they have to give up the fragrance. You cannot have fragrance and extreme longevity in the same rose!

Cherries and Blueberries now on the order form at Bailey's Local Foods

Cherries and Blueberries on Friday!!!!!
A very quick message to let you know that we will have the last of the Niagara cherries available on Friday. They will be coming from Romagnoli Farms in Beamsville and this family also uses IPM (Integrated Pest Management) to minimize the use of chemicals on their fruit.

The Hedelfingen is an old European variety. It is a mahogany red sweet cherry good for fresh eating, pies, juice, freezing (especially in black cherry ice cream), dehydrating and canning. The fruit is large, firm and quite sweet.

Along with the last of the cherries comes the first of the blueberries! These are conventional, but we will have organic blueberries once their season starts!

Sounds like a great weekend for canning and fruit salad!

Hello everyone,

We just want to remind everyone that there will not be a pick up day on July 29th due to the long weekend. Make sure you order enough for 2 weeks!

I think this heat is sapping my inspiration to write, so I'll give you a list of highlights for this week and go lie down in the shade.
  • We've arranged for shelled BULK peas in 10 lb bags this week. We missed out last year due to too much rain. I think Nina used to put 7 of the big bags in her freezer to last the winter and found that banging the bag to break off a chunk and adding to soup or cooking what came apart from the mass of frozen peas worked well. Andrew is looking forward to cooking peas into creamy curries this winter. The peas have no chemicals applied and they are ready to go straight into the kettle or the freezer. There are 1 lb bags available too for those with less freezer space or if you're just looking for a snack!
  • If you haven't looked at the fruit section this week there are some new additions. Peaches, early plums and limited apricots from Palatine. There are also bouquets of their famous roses in the 'plants' section.
  • Paul Bowman has bulk zucchini available starting this week. What a great opportunity to preserve or freeze. Anyone have favourite zucchini recipes to share?
  • We will be stocking up on Country Flavour preserves this week. The Brubacher sisters make jams, and other great preserves so that you don't have to! In addition we have bulk cases available to you This also means we now have more local ketchup...
  • Speaking of ketchup, it's hot dog season! We have all the fixings... Beef, chicken or turkey wieners, sauerkraut, ketchup, relishes, buns etc.
  • We want to remind everyone about the 100 Mile Spelt bread from Golden Hearth . the only truly all local bread with local spelt, sourdough yeast and Sifto salt from Goderich. We have not been able to purchase this bread recently as we have not hit the minimum needed. If you see 11 remaining, it's a go and they will make the bread for us!
  • We have organic and conventional raspberries available. We hope to have bulk available for August 5th pick up. They are yummy!
  • Whole chickens from Snyder Heritage Farms - Aura smoked one on the BBQ and it looked divine! What a great way to make several meals at once in this hot weather.
  • It is way to hot out to turn your oven on. Lena Horst will do the baking for you. Have you tried her new and improved homestyle fresh baked pies. She also has muffins and loaves!
  • Don't forget it is McKechnie week... Quesadillas are great on the BBQ with cheese from Millbank, and your choice of veggies. There are so many amazing farmers to choose from.
  • Aura is at the cottage this week and is making pizza on the BBQ with Golden Hearth dough, mushrooms from Pfennings, green onions from Paul Bowman, tomatoes from Florlane, homemade garlic scape pesto and chevre from Monforte.
  • Katahrina from Anna Tolazzi chocolate is on vacation this week, so I just stocked up on lots of her chocolate bars so we wouldn't go without. If you haven't tried them yet they are amazing!
Keep cool and keep the farmers in mind with this dry, hot weather. May their irrigation systems keep plants happy until we get some much needed rain! We hope that they and all their helpers don't overdo it in this weather!

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend. We sure did. There was so much going on around town we just could not make it to all of it.

Cherries front and centre!
We have some good news and somewhat sad news for those cherry lovers like me. We heard back from Mary Jane, Cherries have been added to the order form for this week’s pick up!!! The sad news is this may be the only week we have them available for pre-order. The season is going to be short this year due to all the rain we received during the spring. Get them while you can!!!

Here is more info from Mary Jane:

Due to the cooler, overcast and wet spring we are very limited in the amount of local cherries available this year. At best we will have this first run on Friday July 15th and that may just be about it. There will not be any later varieties this year because the cherries suffered from black rot long before they even got a chance to ripen. I guess they prefer to have warm roots and a dry breeze to keep them happy.

The hardy cherry that survived the spring is the Hedelfingen cherry. The Hedelfingen is an old European variety. It is a mahogany red sweet cherry good for fresh eating, pies, juice, freezing (especially in black cherry ice cream), dehydrating and canning. The fruit is large, firm and quite sweet.


If we do not have cherries on the order form for July 22nd we will try to have some on the spontaneous table for that day. My son Otis and I will be visiting family in Niagara all of next week. We will do our best to track some cherries down and get them to you.

Kohlrabi recipes
Well, you’ve been asking about Kohlrabi - and why not? It’s not well known, looks incredibly funny and you don’t know what to do with it.

First, kohlrabi tastes sort of like broccoli stems, but milder and sweeter. Not selling you yet? Try it peeled and sliced up on a veggie platter! You could also make a mean slaw with it or Maryrose suggested it as a gratin dish - shredded and topped with breadcrumbs and cheese... oh the cheese!

The reason our kohlrabi comes with the leaves is because they are good for you too! Eleanor specifically asked that we get kohlrabi with leaves and suggested some great ways to enjoy it:

The leaves are good to eat either raw (mixed in with greens), or steamed like collards. I slice and fry the root in olive oil with dill seeds, and serve the steamed leaves with it. Combines beautifully with turnips (rutabagas I mean) along with any meat (especially lamb) or any veg patty.

Ordering open Wednesdays at 10am!
We're trying to figure out what works best and I think we're settling on the order from being open from Wednesday at 10am until the following Tuesday at 8pm for Friday's pickup. When we can we'll open it for longer (when we're closed for the long weekends), but I'm hoping that this will work well for you. If you like instant updates, you can find them on Facebook, but expect email reminders on Thursday or Friday and then again on Mondays.

There are a lot of new items available this week as well as many interesting events and stories to share. We can't share everything, but if you want to bring our attention to items for sharing, we'll do what we can!

Have your say about the proposed Melancthon Quary Protest
Many of you have forwarded us information on the proposed quarry that will threaten prime farm land and water quality in Ontario. More information is available at http://stopthemelancthonquarry.ca and there is lots of detail at http://66.212.167.146/MelancthonMegaQuarry/. There are multiple petitions to sign from various organizations (including http://www.avaaz.org/en/stop_the_quarry/?rc=fb&pv=46) that are asking for signatures before Sunday night.

"Highland Companies has officially filed a 3,100 page application for their 2,300 acre up to 200 foot below the water table open pit limestone mine. Their plan will have a catastrophic effect on local business, environment, community and health, destroying an internationally recognized treasure forever and polluting the water supply of millions of people."

  • Soiled Reputation has Braising Greens - So good and so easy - Ask if you want a recipe!
  • Noah from Traditional Foods is introducing Ginger Breakfast Sausage at a special price and also offering the large size Ginger Sausages on sale this week! Ground chicken is also on sale.
  • Vibrant sale still on!

Hi everyone! How was your long weekend?

I am thankful for lovely weather and all the fruit that July brings. If you forage for local fruit there should be mulberries, and service berries/Saskatoon berries starting now, maybe even some currants.

The kids and I picked mulberries this morning. I managed to fill two yogurt containers, and then one was eaten when we got home. The kids wanted to pick lots of mulberries to make ice cream, pie and cake, but that may not happen unless they learn to put a few berries in their buckets! I also helped a friend shake a big bowl of berries out of her new found mulberry tree this evening. Mmm...

A snack of McKechnie tortilla chips and the Feta and Spinach Dip from Green Table Foods (available next week!) was super easy AND a big hit after we biked home from the morning's foraging.

Are you ready for Cherry Season?!?!?
The Cider Keg in Vittoria (near Simcoe) has an early variety of cherries ready for us this Friday!! (I wonder if there will be a cherry apple cider on the horizon?) They are available by the half bushel or by the quart.

Since we get so many questions about this:
  • A pint is half a quart (12 pints = 6 quarts = 1 flat)
  • A dry quart is a bit bigger than a litre (2 pints = 1 quart = 1.137 Litres
  • Dry quarts and liquid quarts measure differently
  • The darker green, more sturdy looking plastic baskets with rounded corners are litres, the lighter green, slightly larger baskets with square corners are quarts. 
  • Farmers are generous and tend to top up whatever container they are using.
Pickling Cucumbers
Irene Brubacher called and she has a limited number of 3L baskets of pickling cucumbers available for Friday. Are you wondering what to do with a small amount of pickles?

The Brubachers also have the first of this season's Kohlrabi available... the funniest looking vegetable out there!

Monforte Cheese stands out
My children have an expensive cheese habit. The 4 year old could eat his weight in Toscano, a Tuscan inspired hard sheep cheese. I don't entirely blame him, but thankfully he's a lightweight!

My seven year old has different tastes. She was distressed when we finished the C-Line Pro with Chives from Gordon's Goat Dairy (available again on the 15th), but then decided that the Sheep Milk Cheddar from Monforte was pretty good too and has finished that off. After encouraging her to taste the Little Prince (it was like a soft chevre log with a coating of ash), it's been her request ever since.

While it's not on the order form (yet), the Formidable (chevre with chocolate and cayenne) was something that we picked up at the Thursday Market last week and it's divine at room temperature with strawberries. I'll ask Ruth if we can offer it soon.

A few more things to note:
  • This is likely the last week for organic strawberries. Paul Bowman has pints left. He has dropped the price. They are now $4 per pint (half a quart). Get them while you can!
  • Theresa from Garden Party has fresh herbs available! Almost any herb you want is now available in bunches! Can't use a whole bunch? Hang them upside down and dry them to use all winter long! (C'mon, don't be so surprised that I mentioned it. You need to think about winter and freeze or dry or jam all the berries and fruit and other produce you want to use then!)
  • Pete and Mary from Apple Creek Farm are working hard to protect their apple tress so we will have lots of tasty organic apples come fall (the rain this spring has been a challenge to them) but in the mean time their bulk apple sauce is an awesome reminder of the bounty and makes great freeze pops! If you haven't tried their Apple Butter yet, this might be a good time! They also had a limited amount of cherry and grape tomatoes available. If you weren't one of the lucky people who ordered them quickly, they will be offered next week again!
  • McKechnie Tortillas and J&D Pastas are available this week. Last time they were offered we forgot to make the taco shells and tostadas available, but they are definitely on the order form for you now! What better to go with the fresh lettuce and tomatoes?
  • All the artisan breads from Grainharvest that Roland sampled a few weeks back are now on the order form in the 'loaves and buns' section under 'baked goods'
  • Speaking of new items - there are also lots of new offerings from Stemmler's!
  • Remember that it's grilling season and we've got some deals on the amazing grass fed organic beef from Vibrant Farms. May I take a moment to point out the round steak? One could feed a family and may make you think you're Fred Flintstone. Just think - a steak with an average weight of 4.5 lbs?!?!
  • Soy Oil from Pristine Gourmet is on sale for $2 off also!

The posters generally encourage people to plant a garden, eat locally, keep chickens for eggs, reduce the consumption of meat and wheat, preserve many fruits and vegetables, save fuel, help local farmers, and waste less. Not entirely bad ideas...
